Re: generator?
When I bought mine about 8 yrs ago I wanted one of the super quiet Honda generators. Wasn't in the budget though. I bought a Honda powered generator instead. It falls about 1/2 way between one of the quiet all Honda units and your typical Briggs/Tecumseh powered generators as far as noise. You can find them and they are powered by the Honda GX series OHV industrial engines. Mine has the 6.5 hp GX 200. 8 yrs old no with nothing but oil changes once a season, one air filter and couple of spark plugs.
Mine is very similar to this:
http://www.brandnewengines.com/ch350is.aspx
Caught it on sale for about $500. At 3500 watt's it's big enough to power everything I need at the track. Air compressor does tax it a little. I can also use it at home during a power outage. It can run lights, tv and fridge. Microwave as well if I turn some other things off.

Re: generator?
I have an Onan diesel on the RV and it is nice and quiet but on the trailer I have a 6500 McCulloch and it is loud. (Don’t park by me at the Bash!) I had a Honda once and it was quiet. I need to break down and buy a Honda.

I have a 5500w Honda, its not super quiet but it wasnt a million bucks either. It had a 2 gal tank which blows so i built a 12 gal deal for it................can run for 2 days without filling. It is an air cooled deal so I put it on a slideout otherwisw it prolly would over heat in the compartment.

Re: generator?
I have a Honda-powered gen. 4500 watt. I bought this thing in 1995 or 96 and have done nothing but oil changes, a couple of spark plugs and a fuel filter. I've always used synthetic oil. Like Richter said, it's not super quiet but it wasn't terribly expensive either. I couldn't even begin to guess the number of hours it has sat and just run and run. Powered the house for 3-4 days on a couple of occasions. It's still going strong.
It'll probably blow up now that I bragged on it!

Like Jon said if you have a air cooled gen the portable type you need it on slide outs to pull it outside of the compartment,if not it can run hot and explode in the gen box.I have seen this myself from where a guy brought his trailer in to get it fixed it exploded blowed up the compartment and burnt the side of his trailer and inside wall. Was like $4500 to fix his trailer and replace the gen just something to think about.

Steele brand.
I bought this last fall new $500.00 new here locally. It is very quiet, but I have yet to run it loaded heavy. Electric start and a big fuel cell.

Lol!!
It's funny... When I first met my chassis guy way back when our first transaction resulted in me fixing his Onan generator on his '86 Ford-based camper that he towed the Maverick with. Camper was 460 powered, of course Every time he'd fire anything up that needed current (AC, etc.) the genset would just laugh & cough... Turned out the generator lost one winding in a phase that I was able to pull enough wire to re-bond and return it to full capacity
Re: generator?
if you just need a little guy I like the makita I have at work. Its new so time will tell....and i dont know who manufactures it for them.
Onans are nice, but Honda is tough to beat.

Re: generator?
I have had a Honda EU3000, then a Honda EU6500 as well as the little EU1000 all are very nice. Quiet, reliable and compact. Initial outlay is higher than a lot of others but worth it in my opinion.
