Cam movement
Does anybody know what keeps the cam in the 460 from moving? Does the cam bolt keep the cam from moving backwards or does the bearing in the back of the block keep the cam from moving towards the back of the motor? I have excessive movement in my cam. The cam bolt backed out which allowed the cam to shift towards the back of the block.

A cam in a 460 is held in place by the retainer plate, it keeps the cam from moving.
If its moving you have only a few things that can be wrong
1) wore out component, face of the cam, face of the timing gear or the cam plate itself or excessive clearance.
2) Incorrectly fastened cam gear, too long of bolt bottoming out and not allowing the gear to seat. too long of cam pin not allowing the gear to seat.
