Plastic Fuel Jug Repair?

Post  Wheelie58 on August 23rd 2011, 8:03 am

One of my favorite fuel jugs developed a tiny leak on the bottom yesterday. Being a cheapskate, I was considering the proper method to repair the leak. It looks like a little puncture...maybe from setting down on a stone.
Has anyone had success with a repair? If so what did you use? Maybe JB Weld?
The jug is anly about 15 years old, and I just hate to see it go.....

Keith Napa here sales a plastic repair kit I have used it on a battery that had a hole about midway down one corner it was only about 2 months old at the time.I repaired it with it and the battery is still working fine after 2 years. The plastic repair is a 2 part deal you mix together it may work fine for what you want to do on the jug.

How about a blind rivet. I have seen that used to repair fuel tanks plenty of times. Not sure if it will work on a plastic jug though.

I repaired my lawn mower gas jug with a hot knife. Filled it with water, turned upside down, and smoothed out the hole with a hot knife - easy, still good after 10 years.

I know what you mean Keith, I don't like these new fuel jugs nowhere near as much as my old ones. A lot of the new ones don't even hold 5 gallons.

As I shopped for new jugs, I discovered that many places now call them "utility jugs" and that the fuel jugs that we know and love are not legal in California and other states for transporting fuel.
They want metal ones with a special spout.....
