2004 Explorer ESM testing Empty 2004 Explorer ESM testing

My daughters 04 Explorer set of the Service Engine Soon light yesterday. I scanned it and come up with code p0401. From everything I have read online is that it is the ESM (EGR system module). I confirmed that her truck has the ESM and not the DPFE like the prior year, bummer. Anyways my question is there a way to test this one before I shell out $150 bones and the Ford dealership? Has anyone ever seen cleaning it help?

Part number for it that I found online is 5L2Z9D475A.

My wife's 05 had the same issue. Cleaning did not help. I replaced it 6 months ago and all is well. Instead of Ford I bought a Borg-Warner replacement at Advance. Their reg price is $106. If you sign up for the emails they constantly have codes for 20-25% off online. Just order and pick it up locally for no shipping. I think I paid $80 something.

Thanks for the link David.

Did you truck experience any engine issues before you changed it? It seems to run fine just the SES light is on.

It seemed to develop a part throttle light load miss, but that may have just been the plugs or wires. I replaced them at the same time and all was well after that. Beware, the plugs were in the aluminum heads with no anti-seize that I could see...lots's a screeched and gritting of teeth when removing. Lucikily, did not break any off in the head. Also, it was odd, but this thing had two different part# plugs. Left side was one, right was another.
