Starting a new old project

Post  whitefield on December 4th 2011, 10:34 pm

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I have a 1964 fairlane with a mustang II front in and mini tubs . it also has cal tracs and square tubing tying the frame together with six point cage.

I have a boat load of questions!

I want to keep my 10" rear wheels and cal trac set up. If possible!

First question is engine placement . How far back do I need to set the engine ?
second question what is the optimum engine height to place the engine ?
Ride height is the next thing how low can I go and still have decent traction?
The problem with the car when I had it together before was when you took off the rear of the car would pick up . No weight transfer and couldn't launch on trans brake.
What are the best springs and shocks to run for the front with the mustang II front end?
I will stop for now on the questions for now thanks for you advise and help.

Id put the engine as close to the fw as you can, not familiar w those cars but on mine I cut the pump out and just put a flat fw in it.

I'd loose the caltrac stuff, Greg P semi made his work but he had to put a lot of travel in the front sus and make er loose...that M2 deal aint got no travel lol. Id stick a good ladderbar coilover setup under it and be done.

After talking with John Calvert at PRI, the stuff can and does work, quite a number of cars in the 8's and even 7's on the stuff.

put the engine back far as possible and also high if your looking for traction.you only have so much to work with on the rear as far as ride height goes so keep the front up as much to also help weight trans. Very Happy pics too!

Yes that will be a big help ! I am gathering parts together to run a big block and 3 spd trans.
Plans to have the Rat rod look combined with the Moonshine runner and T bolt look.

I had everything worked out to ladder bar and coil over Jimmy Thompson's Fairlane before he died. Probably no more than two nights work if you had all the parts.

You can keep your leafs if you like and run floaters.

I am going to collect all of my engine and front end parts first along with wheels and Tires Then start mocking everything up and weighing it.
Thanks Blake I will be talking to you. Cool
