enigine revs ..dies in drive

Post  johndickjr on December 29th 2011, 10:47 pm

not a BBf but a sbf 302..has a set of heads that flow tad over 300 intake...has a small roller in it 498 lift..headers...etc..msd stuff..carb is a proform 650..in gear it will hit the rpm instantly, very responsive, (once it warms up) put the car in gear and it will idle but try to give it gas and it bucks farts and dies...i noticed my fuel pressure is crap..guess pump is going out its at 2-3 psi..but fuel bowls are full...could that be my problem

Check the mech advance in the dizzy. I had a BBF with too light of springs, no bushing in the advance slot. It was all in the mech advance at idle so base timing was low. Put it in gear and load it and it would fall out of the mech advance curve and buck and die since the base timing was low. We chased this thing for weeks until Lem mentioned it ...

Put some tight springs and big bushing in it and set total timing at 3000rpm and all was ok.

I have had a vacuum leak do that too. It was tricky to find, lifter valley side of the intake gasket.
