Currie or Strange? Empty Currie or Strange?

Post  GT300TD October 1st 2012, 9:24 pm

Finally took me '64 Galaxie XL (466 maybe 475 horsepower, C/6, 3.70 trac lok) to the strip Saturday, 1/8 mile with a super sticky starting line. Fourth pass, did a burnout, went to the line, foot brake, 3000 rpm ,green light, bang broke the rear end Sad . It's a cut down F150 housing, built by a professional, rebuilt trak lok, new gears, 31 spline Mosier axles, 295/55/15 ET Streets w/28 lbs of air. Rear is on jack stands, trans in neutral, can turn both wheels forward but not reverse. The case or the housing is not broken, no leaks, but the housing has an imprint of the ring gear in it, you can see an outline of about 5 teeth. I will probably tear it down tomorrow, any thoughts?

Any way I think I'll go to a better set up. I was looking in the Jegs book and they offer a Strange S-series complete nodular third member, no horsepower rating, for $1210 and a Currie 9+ Sportsman complete nodular third member, rated up to 650 horsepower, for $1260. The $50 difference doesn't matter, I just want to know which one is the BEST??? It's a street car that might see about 6 to 8 races a year. I will be taking the 'box' of pieces back to the builder though lol!
Thanks Smile

Get a strange pro iron case, stay away from the street rod stuff, if your going to race it any.

Call Brydon at Quick Performance, he will set you up for less than that. I have a Yukon in mine that has held up to some serious abuse. It is the aluminum one with the 10 bolt pinion and through bolted caps. Cool

I'm not sure I'd be wanting to ask Harlod about his rear end..... He seems a little sensitive about those things... Laughing

Broke both of the bearing caps at the bolts, all 4 breaks look about the same, clean through haha. Destroyed my ring and pinion, too. Sad
I'll give Rick a call, or maybe I should call Harold first Razz Smile

X2!

I used to run all Strange but after going around with them for 2 weeks about my Ranger rearend I called up Moser and they didn't argue with me at all I told them what I planned on doing and what I wanted and they had it at my door in 3 days (they are both within about an hour and a half from me). Much better customer service!

I run one of those strange s cases. Heck of a deal if you ask me. But then again, I only have about 650 hp off the transbrake.
