Rounded off starter bolt

Upper bolt on starter on 5.0 mustang, motor in car, exhaust is off, bolt is crazy tight and a short head and rounded shoulders. Any ideals before I use a die grinder?

Can you get to it with a hammer or hammer and punch? Sometimes just a few wacks can jar stuff loose. Also did you try to tighten it a bit first?

No shoulders to get a hold of

there are sockets with a left handed internal thread like the ones used for removing rounded wheel nuts. They come in different sizes.

or you can try metric sizes and pound it on

The bolt extracter set that Sears sells works great. Might try some heat .

Update

Try to drive a nut over the damaged bolt head and weld the inside of the nut to the bolt head. Let it cool for about 30 seconds and then try to back it out. That is if you have a mig welder handy.

finally got mad enough and ground the head off. I will find bolts with a taller head to go back in.

use a stud and nut

Had'nt thought of that, good ideal.

Lock tite the stud in the trans and dont over tighten the nut it will pull the treads out of the trans. I over tighten the one i put in my c6 and when my engine kicked back cause the battery was low it pulled out and broke the ear off my starter.
