My Son (Dillon 16 years old) and myself (Johnny)are new to the 385 engines but not new to Fords. We are needing a little Guidance on this build .We have done some searching but haven't came up with much on the lower cubic inch builds. First, what we are looking for is just a mostly street driven truck with lots of low end grunt. Hoping for 400-425 horse and 500ish torque. Its a 1980 F100 Flareside. The engine we have is a 69 LTD 429 2v 10.5-1 CR . C9VE block C8VE-F heads. C6 trans from the 69 LTD with stock converter. Its going to be bored .030 over. We be will be running on 93 pump gas. We are looking for opinions on the most CR we can go on 93 octane. What model Comp Cam? Should I have the bigger CJ valves put in the heads? Intake? One cam that keeps poping up on cam quest is the XE256H. Seems little to me but????
We will be useing comp cams roller rockers with new studs and guide plate. Do I need to have the stud bosses machined down a little to use the guide plates? Sorry for so many question right out of the gate and thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum lots of great people and knowledge here.....

The 10.5 is a good street compression
For intake a rpm would be a good pick along with a custom hyd cam in flat tappet
For a carb a quick fuel 950 dp would be a good choice
Now a duraspark dizzy with a re curve will do just fine with a msd box to fire it
On the heads get some harden seats with a bowl blend and cj valves would be good

What rear end are you going to put in it or does it have?

hello Johnny and son and welcome, the 429 is a good starting point and the early ones are getting harder to come by, but if you are going to have it bored I would look around a little and find a 460 crank (early model 69-78) then you will have more options for pistons, the 429's don't have many options that are cheap and the 460's do and the only difference is the crank and pistons, so look around for a 460 crank they are out there for cheap then you can use all your other parts, with the C8VE heads you will have to use a dished piston to get the compression down a little a .030 460 with those heads will be close to 11.1 and that will be a little to much, so good luck and have fun doing it

The rear end is a 9inch 2.75 open. We will eventually put in a locker and 3.50ish ratio.

Like has been suggested find a 460 crank, since your buying pistons anyway it's cheap extra power.

For a true street build, I keep the compression down to about 9.5:1 with the iron heads, this is because of your gearing and heavy truck.

Comp cams 274xe or similar cam and matching components, performer rpm and a 850 Holley, Headers and a good ignition like msd or reworked duraspark

Use a convertor with about 2500-2700 stall and upgrade the gears when you can to 3.50 to 3.91 or their about
