COUPLE of my chevy buddies were talking smack about my new engine build. ITS a 473 with cv 8 heads ported with 2.19 and 1.76 valves scotty custom cam comp is about 10 to 1  motor is balanced with victor intake and 950 double pumper. has headers and x pipe. I told them I thought it would make 500 HP mabe a little better they said I would be lucky to get 400HP. will my combo make 500?

How big and what style is the cam ? and how ported are the heads ?

Depending upon the RPM range and the camshaft, it might ... it will certainly make over 500 lb/ft of torque.

400hp out of that should be a breeze by 5000 rpm.

At the flywheel it will do it all day long. At the wheels it depends on the rest of the combo..... Gearing, tire size, transmission type, convertor, type of wheel dyno, how the dyno is used and set-up.

Example..... I had a 347 with a C4 and it made 268hp at the wheels on a friends mustang dyno.... It ran 11.50's at 118mph and would regularly outrun cars making a lot more wheel hp.

Wallace racing calculator says that if your car weighed 3000 lbs you were making @ 400.

I ported the heads using scottys web site first set I ever done cam card is at shop not sure of the specks scotty ground one for me. DONT know if its 500 or not but it sure set my fairlane on fire lol

The car was loaded with functioning air and power everything.... Probably more like 450 and 3500#

If this is on a chassis dyno and it has a high stall converter the power is going to show lower than it actualy is. Also tire pressure will move the number around.

Chevy guys always think that fords wont make power so why not play along? Then when it outperforms their bowtie stuff they will be speechless. A chevy friend of mine acquired a damaged drag car with a stroker 351w to 393 for free. He was curious to what it would do after a couple of driveway burnouts and found that it dyno'd at over 520hp. Now he's impressed and is working to get the chassis ready to go to the track. He said that if it was an SBC he would expect high 400's. I talked to him about the attributes of the 351w over the SBC and he listened but is still a bowtie guy. Maybe that will change after a few times down the strip.

Tell them that same combo w/a .600 ft cam runs 9.80s in a chevy vega on 93 pump gas!
