this was the pass friday night. i cant figure why the low side rev went past 4800,where it is set at.the other problem is how slow the rpm came up,only gain 600rpm to 60'out.the rpm drop at shift point is 1000 then climbs back to 7400 at the end. confused  i'm new to this thing but it looks like the converter is 6-800 rpm tight,but the 7400rpm finish figures to 21% slip.........any ideas? anybody use msd grid? I have a grid on my new car but have not used it yet. Wish I could offer some help. If you need some help the guy I work with on the drag radial car is good. Give me a shout and i'll hook you up with him.

Got it figured out.the low side has a safety feature for 30 second lock out after transbrake release. Thats ok if you dont have a probrake.next issue was the 10*launch retard.I've been leaving at 24*for 1second out.maybe with the timing fixed and leaving less than 6500 it'll work better.

The grid has turned out to be very good. We use it on pro mods to control the promag as well as the X275 nitrous cars. Lots of options.







I still like every EFI system better because they can be made to do all of the same things but each has there place.

Bringing back an old thread. I've finally figured I need to upgrade from the old original MSD 7al-2 with a start/retard box attached and looking at a grid. I still need the start retard and want to add in a 2 step as well as tie into a co2 shifter setup, so figured this would be the best way to eliminate the me issues. Any recommendations on how to set this thing up or if I need any additional modules?

you can use the grid with your 7al2 box without any trouble. Make sure and have an old laptop,pre Windows 8, or you'll have trouble with programing it. It'll do everything your looking for and then some. Cool

i put a grid in the dragster this summer. had some firm ware issues. the box would get stupid and the timing curve would go nuts. as i would rev the engine, the timing would drop. reload the program and it was fine. once i updated the firmware it "seems" ok. It is a pretty slick piece though

Before you use it upgrade everything with the new firmware from their website. We've used them with about every Windows operating system out there without issue. It can do more things than most people need or even know that it can do. It's an awesome piece. About the only thing better is using efi systems because they can do everything a grid can do and if you're efi you already have it. Wink

I was playing around with it last night. temporarily powered it up in the kitchen and hooked it to the laptop. This thing will do way more than I will ever need in a mud truck. I'm still a little unclear on how to set up the rpm switches. I'm debating on getting the ACD drag parts co2 shifter with microprocessor or try to run it through the grid. Was reading that with the grid, it seems to always want to see an rpm drop before it releases for the next shift where I can program that out on the ACD and just pulse it. Any recommendations on which way to go? This is a straight line mud bog truck, launch off the transbrake at 4800, doing the 1-2 shift about 58-6000 and 2-3 shift about 7-7200. Tired of the inconsistancy of trying to do this by hand while making sure I don't roll the truck in the mud after hitting the hill in the middle of the track.

I'd prefer to use a separate controller for that than use the grid. We've seen a lot of inconsistency using the grid to shift. Others have been perfect though.

I think I'm seeing what you were talking about. in a drag racing world, its normal to see some rpm drop on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. However, I'm in a mud racing world where you really don't see that rpm drop, especially on the 1-2 shift simply because of the constant wheel slip. Lowest I can set the rpm drop is 200 rpm and that's not cutting it. MSD Tech suggests adding switches to the shifter to close when it goes into 2nd and 3rd gear then trigger step inputs. Know of any way to do that on a Pro Stick or know of any shifter that has provisions for that?
