Starter issues w/TCI midplate.

Was just wondering if anyone has had any starter meshing issues w/TCI midplate. I have fought this as long as I've had this car. I've been contemplating taking it out and sending it to KFM for a new one.

Here are a couple of things to check.
Mock the starter and mid plate on an engine with the Flexplate that you are using.
Pull the starter pinion "out" in the engaged position and block it there. I usually put a couple tie wraps around the small part to make it stay out.
Now you can check your engagement depth and tooth backlash.
Most starter guys recommend between.015" and .040" tooth clearance.
If your pinion is not coming all the way across the ring gear tooth, that needs to be addressed.
There seems to be a wide variation on offsets when aftermarket Flexplates are made.
An easy way of checking the accuracy of the starter register hole is to stack an OE starter locator plate on it, using the dowels to align the plates.
If the starter fits loosely in the register hole ( the 4.091 ish one) you will experience problems.

Is that clearance between the end of the starter gear cog where it meshes with the flexplate gear?
