Why do you need to use adv bushings in the distributor when you set up for total timing?

They limit the amount of distributor advance it will produce which will determine the amount of initial timing.
Locked distributors don't use one.

But should you use one when you have an unlocked dist?

The instructions that come with the distributor will have all that information as to what bushings and springs to use to suit your advance curve.

I use these bushings:

Red-Smallest 28
Silver 25
Green 23
Blue 21
Purple 19
Black-Largest 18

The black MSD bushings allow 18 degrees of mechanical advance.
I wanted more initial advance so I used the 4secondsflat 10 degree bushing.
Works very well.
