Reading plugs with C6
Im not sure if this belongs in trans tech or nitrous tech but what I was always told was go through the traps throw it in neutral and shut the motor off to get a clean plug reading after a nitrous pass. I did it 3 times the last time out and it went fine. Now I read that it is bad for the trans and it can explode the drum because it shuts the pump off and the shaft speed is extremely high. It is a stock rebuild C6 with red alto clutches and a foward manual vb.

They are all chevy threads but I guess Fords are the same. What should I do to get a clean plug reading?

I'm not a Tranny guy by NO means so I can't say what it could do. But I use to do it in the Maverick all the time and I never had any problems. As a matter of fact, the ole Mav ran high 9's and low 10's for the 12 years I raced it and never once had a problem w/tranny. Freshened it up once after 7 and thats it.

I have heard of this problem in the Chevy transmissions (TH400) but never in a C6.
Edit: After reviewing the posted threads on YB all of those guys are talking about GM units. Down shifting, starting a burnout in 1st is all easy ways to break one of those units.

From a safety standpoint I wouldn't "throw it into nuetral". I know most all shifters have a reverse lock-out but they do fail. If you have ever seen someone hit reverse at the traps you will understand.
I have and he is now dead, he was only going 11.40 @ 116. Better safe than sorry and it is easier on the tranny and trying to stop.

I know it was all gm junk but they said all 3 speeds. I think C6s have a certain burnout procedure as well. I dont remember what it was though.

How do you "throw it into neutral" with a reverse manual valve body? If you try to shift into neutral, it will downshift to 2nd and 1st before you get there
! I would think that something might go bang-boom before you got there.

Re: Reading plugs with C6
When I ran my C6 (only about 700-750hp) I never had an issue with popping it into neutral with a reverse VB. I can't speak for the C4 guys, but the C6 is one of the toughest tranny's out there.
Yeah Frank, that car is totally B/A.

I do it all the time in my truck. My girls call it stealth mode. We will be coming down the street and about to be home. They want stealth mode, so I throw it in N and kill it. We coast down the street and up into the driveway. One time the neighbors were out in the front yard and gave us a weird look as my truck went by with no sound. My girls just waved.
