stodder solvent, almost like mineral spirts with some additives.I use a filter bag so it lasts awhile, costs almost $45. for 5gal. at larger parts suppliers.

I use mineral spirits to do the big dirty stuff and then do some final cleaning with K&W carburetor cleaner, the stuff is to expensive to use to do the whole job but it works great !

I used to use Varsol too but can't get it around me anymore, that's why I switched over to the mineral spirits.

In the good old days we never used parts washers or (somewhat) EPA friendly solvents. We just cleaned parts with plain old gas or diesel in a drain pan, then dumped it out the back door of the shop when done. Helped kept the weeds in check. Laughing

The old guy in the shop next to me used to dump all his used motor oil out the back door of his shop for what seemed like 100 years. Everyone else in the row of shops had dirt/weeds out behind their shops. But this old guy had dumped so much used oil out back over the years that it was like he had poured asphalt out there. Shocked

Mineral Spirits

Post  747JetMech on January 22nd 2010, 7:02 pm

What I do is fill the part washer just below the pickup with water. Then I fill it the rest of the way with mineral spirits. Much cheaper!
