Should he screw it? Empty Should he screw it?

Post  Bsherry August 15th 2009, 10:04 pm

Went to the local drag strip here yesterday to watch the races.

One of the cars was a Nissan Skyline running in the 9's. The car had a set of MT drag slicks 30 X 14s on it with NO screws in the rims. Driver told me the car puts out 1,000 HP. I asked him why he didn't have screws in the rims and he said the tires don't slip on the rims--but he didn't have any type of indicator marks to monitor it?

I wanted to mark the tire to show him but didn't want to come off as the "smart ass American" at their track. They will be back at the track in two weeks. Should I ask them to mark the rim/tire or let it go?

Just another data point; the Nissan made 4 passes and I never saw anyone take a tire gauge and check the tires between passes? At one point the car was sitting in a way that the right rear tire was in direct sunlight and the driver side was in the shade.

That didn't impress me too much either Shocked

Explain to him that you wanna help. No charge/cost to him...

Then start to explain the finer points of chassis tuning...

When his head explodes, he may actually pay attention...

Al,

Yup, still over here.

One of the racers told me that the fastest car in the entire country has only run 8.50.

My guess is Nick will be brining his car over here, turn on all eight stages of Nx, and run a 8.40 so he can claim to be the fastest car in the ENTIRE country Very Happy

We would NEVER hear the end of that one Laughing

If he has tubes it could be a disaster waiting to happen, if tubeless not so much. When the rim gets wider than the tread its a good idea to screw them anyway to keep the bead from unseating at high mph.

Next race is on the 29th of August.

I think I'm going to try Nick's suggestion and see if they will let me use a marker and put a line on the tire and rim.

I'll get some pictures next race.
