I thought the only thing outlawed was chrome plating. I think all powder coating is still legal and I don't think the housing would matter either way

Ky is right..won't matter on the housing..

Not sure about the hammertones, but I know the "silvervein" coatings are not allowed on chassis. Gives the ultrasound false readings..

I asked since Stosh's mustang has the hamertone silver-black finnish. His is grandfathered. According to him its a No-Go on chassis now. Plus, its hard to see a potential crack. JMHO.

hammer tone powder coat

Post  017stosh on February 25th 2010, 10:41 am

talked to div 3 chassis inspecters and hammer tones are not banned. only thing not allowed is chrome. they will scrap a 1/2 inch square away to reference the thickness of the coating. sorry for any confusion.

Yea chrome plating is a no-go because of possible component failures due to hydrogen embrittlement.

Scrape a square of the hammer tone away? Or the chrome?

Will they recert a chrome caged dragster or is there a phase out time frame?

The rule book says no chrome plating of chassis' built after 1-1-2003. I don't exactly remember how it went down for cars built before 1-1-2003 that had chrome, but I think they were grandfathered in for X amount of time. Probably until their next chassis re-cert was due down the road.

I know a while back about the same time the dragster helmet side bar size was increased/set to 1" x .058" a lot of dragster guys with chrome cages went ahead and had their whole cage assembly replaced because it was hard to find anyone willing to deal with the headaches of trying to Tig weld the new 1" bars to an existing chrome plated surface.

A bunch of the S/G & S/C Roadster guys that had chrome cages probably replaced the whole cage assembly too since they also have to have the 1" helmet bars, AND also additional diagonals/supports/gussets added to be similar to the SFI 10.4 specs. That would be a lot of tricky welding to attempt on chrome plated surfaces. I guess the added gussets are now required because a left hand steer roadster could end up a lot heavier than a dragster.

Thanks David. I didn't think about the helmet bars being added and the problem of welding to chrome.
