Spoilers what angle?

Post  Larry Williams on March 19th 2010, 9:46 am

I am waiting on delivery of a team Z spoiler. Do I install it straight or is there an angle to it up or down? What are others using? I need some downwards force at speed.

Is this an adjustable wing (with struts) attached to the back of the deck, or a non adjustable wing sitting mostly on the deck (with no/some amount of overhang)?

If it's an adjustable strut deck wing, even without a wicker or spill plates, a perfectly flat deck wing set at zero degrees will still produce some additional amount of down force vs no wing at all. This is because there is an increase in the car's surface area behind the rear axle C/L for moving air to react with creating additional downforce/leverage. Add small spill plates & wicker and the same strut wing still set at zero degrees will create some good downforce numbers with minimal air drag numbers. Just start at 0* to +1* & go test, add 1 degree per T&T pass if needed. If you end up having to crank in a ton of wing angle to see a benefit (and it's not really a hidden suspension problem), either the wing is too small, or the spill plates/wicker is too small.

Bigger & bigger wing surface area vs bigger & bigger spills/wicker. Both methods will help increase down force numbers with less needed wing angle. But the bigger spills/wicker approach (especially the wicker) will create larger air drag numbers vs going the bigger wing surface area route.

Ours is flat and it makes a huge difference on the big end. We used to haze the tires starting about half track and start moving around a little. Now we are straight as an arrow and no hazing.

thats exactly what I am trying to correct. flat it is going to be.

Dave your explination of the effects is what I needed to understand. thank you. It is an adjustable wing with struts. I need to make the 'stang stable with the small block before I up the anti with the 545 waiting in my garage. I think I am close now to where I need to be.
