got some deck height issues Empty got some deck height issues

Post  jesse 11th April 2010, 00:29

i checked all 4 cornors
1 is 2 in the hole
4 is 1 in the hole
8 is 2 in the hole
but #5 is 6 out of the hole
not happy about this
i dont know went wrong when it was getting decked
i never had any issues with the guy that did it
that is why i had him do my block

so now what?
would i be safe to run a thicker head gasket
should i get the block redecked so they are all 6 out of the hole?
i even swapped out another rod/piston to make shure it wasnt a rod or piston issue
and got the same thing
i have to get a thicker head gasket anyhow since i had to have my heads shaved
and i cant do another block this one is a svo block
so i am even more pissed

have you checked the crank to make sure it isn't it instead?

with the crank in the block measure the piston down the hole and see if it is the same as the rest.... or measure the block deck height from the main OD to the deck and see if the are close or different.....this will give you an Idea wheather it is the block or crank..... and if you are not happy prove him wrong then ask for a new Block out of his pocket......

Agreed... I would think that if the crank (stroke) were off, #1 would also be way out of the hole.

Another issue would be rods mismatched, or some piston pin heights being off. Check the rod/piston combo that is way out of the hole to the one deep in... see where it falls. The tolerances of each individual piece really add up when you are working 3 decimal places.

If the stroke is the same, and the rod/piston combo is the same... it leaves the block being cut wrong, if I am not mistaken.

i think i got it down to the block must have been cut wrong
well cant turn back time
so now what is my best option
i gotta get this up and going asap
i guess my opion's are
milll the block and get it so all pistons are 6 out of the hole
run a thicked head gasket
or
leave it and run a thicker gasket

i am open to any opion's and option's
i am in a bind here

Jesse, I ran into this once and all my pistons were WAY out of the hole. I had the tops of the pistons milled down .016" to re achieve a zero deck height.

Your shop might re-cut the deck and take care of your pistons for you.

i have a set of custom dome's
cutting them to fit the block might be an option
but would rather not go that route

getting napa to buy me a new block ya right
i can ask i guess but i dont see that happin
i am tapped there is no way i can buy a new block

Call your shop guy and ask him how he wants to remedy his f- up.

I would just have him square deck the block to where all pistons are .006 out and run thicker gaskets.

If it's a stock block , if it's a aftermarket block then I would cut the # 6 piston to match the others.

it is a svo block
if i get the piston cut to match
than i gotta get the others balanced to match that one
and the deck would still be off
would i stand a chance on blowing a head gasket
since it is not sqair?
i did take a straight edge and check the block
it does look good
but i dont have a machinest straight edge
i am gonna see if the machinest will come on over here tomorro night and see it for him self
and take it from there

It doesn't matter to the head gasket whether or not the deck is "square" ... the only criteria for the head gasket sealing is that the surface is "FLAT".

only one cylinder is out (#5) ? the deck would have a step in if not the rods/piston . can see more than that on a otb A460 block

sure you can but the A460 block is not in finished form.....when you get them they come 4.34 bore and you have to set your own deck height when the machining is being done.... But not after a fresh machine shop work over..... Shocked I feel the machine shop[ being a reponsible place of establishment should Replace the Block if it is their fault it is machined WRONG....

i needed a thicker head gasket anyhow
