Rollcage & Seat Question

Post  Tore on April 15th 2010, 8:16 am

I need to come up with some more leg room in my car and I want to loop my ( C ) bar that the seatback bolts to. I need to loop it back about 3 inches. Has anyone done this and have they had any problems getting their cage certified.
Next question is I have these cheap plastic seats that seem to lean back a little farther than needed. Is there any seat that sits you straighter up so it sits your body farther back in the seat.
Hope I explained this right.

No its not the bar in front. I am looking at a NHRA rule book from 2007 and it shows a picture of the cage for full bodied cars rear view shows (C) bar and thats where the back of my seat bolts to. I cant supply a picture right now I am at work. Boss would kill me.

The local chassis shop has installed bar "C" bent the way you are talking about in several cars...all have certified just fine. I have saw them off-set as much as 6". As far as the seat, take a look at this one. http://www.kirkeyracing.com/index.php?link=browse&code=Series41
Joe Mayabb here on this board has them on sale. I bought one from him a couple of months ago to replace my plastic seat...very comfortable.

Do you sit back any farther in the car with a different angle seat?

Yes I do...I gained about 3" or more of leg room and sit down much lower in the car.

same seat we have. Our car fits a 6'8" driver so we needed the extra room.

Just swapping from a double walled plastic seat to an aluminum seat (like the Kirkey) will definitely gain you some extra leg (& helmet height) room because the double walled plastic seats are prety thick.

And the upper seat cross bar ("C" bar NHRA/IHRA book) can be bent backward for more seat/leg room. Have seen many cars over the years with this bar bent back, & if I remember correctly even some cage kits came with the bar bent back depending on the body style used. One thing to think about though is the rule book says if the helmet falls below or behind the main hoop then some additional tubing must be added to protect the driver (kinda like the back section of a F/C cage). So depending on how far back you move the seat you might have to do some additional fab work to the cage as well.

Might also make sure when your done that your new moved back seating position still has plenty of clearance between the main hoop & the top of your helmet because more & more inspectors are looking at that these days. They are becoming more & more worried about neck compression injuries.

Dillisgas thanks for the additional info. I will have to check that out when I put the seat in.

Thanks Tore

I ended up with a Kirkey seat and it gave about 3 1/2" more leg room. I just wanted to give the results if anybody else runs into this situation.

I too am planning to have the bar behind my seats moved back some for more leg room. My friend at the performance shop also just had this done in his wagon. It is not an uncommon thing around here to do and should cost around $100-150 at least around here. Wink

It would also be a smart idea to check that any new seating position will also clear the main hoop-to-floor/sub frame connector "D" diagonal bar (if used).

YOU can also cut the back of the plastic seat to clear the bar and gain 2 inches
