Ford racing in SOUTH AFRICA

Post  blown86hallet on May 6th 2010, 11:03 am

Hey yall''

Look at who I found racing boat's over in South Africa....

He is the black sheep out there. 429 ford, steel crank, running off the nose of the crank.. Circle boat stuff. (Twin turbo)
He does not have alot of access to parts, so I led him to this site, plus Evans site and Adney browns site.
Giving him the chance to step up his program, if ever needed to.
Some of the stuff he has on his set up I've never seen run like that, but then again "he does not have alot of access to parts"

I hope he joins our community, keep an eye out for him..

Be kind, he is running what he can..

You saw that too...

The carbs are hanging way off the rear of the engine, with the inner cooler right over the intake. I've seen a million turbo charged BB engine's in boats. This one, by far is the most unique

Ford racing in South Africa

Post  Gideon on May 7th 2010, 4:44 pm

Thanks to Blown86hallet for introducing me to this superb website and for Bruno who accepted me as a new member.
I bought the Hallet years ago without the original twin turbo BBC that was fitted in the boat.I have always been a Ford V8 fan and despite a lot of negative comments i decided to fit the 429BB with turbos. At the time all the other V-drives had BBC engines and they raced it like they bought it. Any information about turbocharginga boat ( especially a Ford BB was non existant and I had to do a lot of research . I finally got hold of books published by HP Books : " Ford Performance " by Pat Ganahl and " Turbochargers " by Hugh MacInnes.
The idea for the setup came out of the latter publication. In the Marine Section there is a picture of an Offshore powerboat fitted with a Twin Turbo Stage 5 Gale Banks setup . I liked the setup because for Waterskiracing it was much easier to recover the skirope and to get access to the battery fitted in the rear.
The Gale Banks intercooler and Dan Ohlson oil cooler was salvaged from a decommisioned boat .I had to manufacture my own intake manifold for the Holley Carbs and the dual Turbochargers. The original aluminium Log type manifolds fitted came from a Berkeley Jet Drive .After a waterpump failure they were destroyed ( melted ) and I manufactured the headers from steam pipe bends and tubing.Had them ceramic coated on the inside and outside .
The Neovane waterpump driven from the camhaft was also fitted on a custom made plate.
I Broke a few exhaust valves and melted a lot of pistons in the beginning but most of the setup is sorted know .I still have problems with oil supply to the rear bearings since we started the circuit and long distance endurance races ( 75 miles ) In a recent endurance race I broke a conrod after running flatout for 22miles at 15lbs boost and 5000rpm . One of the best rides i ever had ( While it lasted )
I have been reading about oiling on the website given by Adam ( Blown86 hallet )
Due to the high altitude we race at and the poor quality of local racing fuel it is difficult to obtain the speeds I read about.
Although a lot of the parts are handmade and I had to do a lot of grinding work on the previous intake manifold and cylinder heads I have managed to compete succesfully against BB chevys with all the " Right Stuff "
Still learning every day.

Thats a cool setup! I really like! It's nice to see people design their own stuff. There is something to be said about building it your self and makeing it work.

Isn't that a pull thru setup? have you had any problems with fuel in the turbos?

Ford Racing in South Africa

Post  Gideon on May 9th 2010, 11:18 am

Thanks for the replies. I have no problems with fuel in the turbos or oil being sucked through the
turbo seals into the exhaust side as well. Before I started this setup I was told that one would need special seals for the draw through system.I originally used two E10 Rajay turbochargers and then changed over to T4 Garrett Turbochargers. No modifications were required on either of the turbochargers.
Despite the position of the carbs and the distance to the intake it starts immediately if you fire it up. If it does not you can be sure there is something out of tune.
Something I want to ask about the oil system as well. I will post the question in the technical section of this forum .
( Still figuring out how to post a image )
