70 F250 lug pattern change..

Post  RapidRuss on May 19th 2010, 7:29 am

I know alot of you guys run Stangs, and a few are Truck puller's... since my last operation on my foot, and the one I have coming up on the 28th of this month , I have had alot of time to think about the resto-mod I was i the process of doing on my truck before some health issue's had set in.. My question is..the f250 as most of you know is a 8 lug x 6 1/2" bolt pattern ..making rather hard to get any kind of a good selection of wheels let alone tires for drag racing and some street use.. I have the Dana 60 rearend..and that can be as simple when I'am ready to order new axle's just have then drill the bolt pattern to a 5 lug...But then getting a drum to fit it ? and the next question is the front Dayton disc system on the front...what would be a good way to get around that... I was just going to build my 68 428CJ block to replace the 395"er thats now in it..and try and pick up something a little lighter as a roller for a BBF build.. But I dont see that in the budget for the future at this time.. So my thinking was to Sell of my 428CJ block stock intake, and 10/10 crank....and put that money toward a BBF build as I have wanted to do for years now..More bang for the buck to say !

Any thoughts would be appreciated.... Smile

I would make it easy on myself and just put a 9" in the rear, it's a bolt in deal, and then just put the F100/150 front stuff on. Easy and cheap. I can usually find donor trucks around here for at the most a couple hundred bucks. Cool

Yeah thats probably the way to go...I'll need to wait til I heal up some before crawling around under the truck..So I can take some measurements to see what 9" rears came on what year trucks to find one that will just bolt up.. I have a bud that has a 9" out of a 67 fairlane with either the equa-loc or the trac-loc in it ? But I would think the mounts would be completely different..

Another problen area I was thinking about is the damn 2 piece driveshaft on these..I'am not convinced that they take a good shock of Tq and slicks... What would the weight difference be between the 9" and the Dana 60 ?

Thanks,

Russ

There are companies that make adaptors. You may have luck that way. OR for the front i know one of my friends took the whole spindle from the kingpins out of a 1/2 ton and put them in a 3/4. I think the only thing he had to do was bush them.
This was on a mid 60's pickup so the 3/4 would probably be a straight axle, but iirc the 1/2 spindles were from a 70's pickup. But thats a long time ago so my memory may be foggy.

As far as I know, all 8-lug Dana 60's rear ends are "full floating"? If so, that axle shafts are not drilled with the bolt pattern. Instead, the axleshafts bolt to the drums. Also, if I remember right, the bolt pattern where the axleshafts bolt to the drums is too large to work with a 5x5.5" or 5x4.5" bolt pattern. The semi-floating Dana 60 is called a light duty D60. It actually has a Dana 60 case and housing, but uses D44 axle shafts. If you wanted the light duty D60 to be as strong as a full floater then you would have to upgrade to Moser/Warn D44 shafts for your rear light duty D60.

One advantage to a full floating Dana 60 is you don't have to worry about losing a wheel if/when you break an axle shaft Smile.

Have a good day!
Michael

international travelalls and half ton pick ups used a rear with dana 60 center. however they used a 5 on 5 semi floater axle style. i dont know whats in your local yards or how the length compares. good luck with truck and health. zbob

I am not sure what your goals are Russ but I would just put a 9" in it. You change the front I beams to 1/2 ton stuff but you will still be looking at 5 on 51/2 which sucks for wheel selection as well. It is quite common to swap crown vic front ends on the 70's trucks now because it is the right width. The whole k member bolts to the bottom of the frame with a little trimming and it will lower the truck quite a bit. Parts are all over the junk yards so it is way cheaper than a MII. The only downside I have seen is they come standard with 12" brakes so you need to run at least a 16" wheel on the front but your wheel selection will be alot greater. Once again I am not sure of your goals but there is some good info on the ford truck enthusiest forum for this swap.
