Tuning window. Empty Tuning window.

Where does compression become hard to tune? Is it the same for alky and gas?
Would a 16to1 engine make much more power than a 13to1?
If you had a good carb. Tuned on a dyno. Would you have to stay on top of weather conditions and make changes all the time?

I'm thinking about a dome piston in my 460, with milled heads. It would be over 16to1.

on gas the % of return per point starts to deminish at about 13:1, IMO 16:1 is not worth the effort on gas.

From my understand 16:1 is a good place for a alky motor.

With that said, there is more to it the just the mechanical compression, you need to look at the dynamic compression for the given build.

I actually figured everyone would call me an idiot for the idea. lol!
Since it could be possible I'll tell you what I'm thinking,

A429 heads fully ported. Milled to 60cc. Filled and raised exhaust. Have
2.25 upsweep headers.Have
Custom solid roller. Need
Wanting to skimp and run a half filled 2 bolt block. scratch
Looking for about a 6500 max.
I have a new victor, but would rather run the new mafia intake.
Going in a mud truck.

I would stay under 15:1. If your cam is short, cylinder pressure could get out of hand.

How important is Quench on an engine like this? I may could get down to 15to1 with a thicker gasket.
Is my 6500 rpm limit why I may not be able to get a big enough cam to help with cylinder pressure?

No but you need enough octane to stave off detonation, and run the timing at an optimal setting.

Would good fuel help there? Something like M5?
Just figured it, A 10cc dome, zero deck, and .040 gasket is about 16.5to1.
Could do something different if its going to be on the raggid edge.

You'd be better off with M1. M5 will throw curves at you, and possibly get hit by the pitch. M5 isnt better fuel, it just has stuff added to it that will lower the tuning window. Nothing wrong with good racing fuel (gas) either.

alky likes all compression.........14.5-14.8 is about optimum.

M5 is fine, but get your tune right on the plain hooch first or you gonna get in trouble quick.

No real reason to get the compression that high, either fuel, and if you do your ignition system better be an arc welder.............. Laughing

Gas or Alky it don't matter ....gotta keep a head gasket on it regardless. From what I've seen if an engine will not run great at 14.5-15/1 it aint gonna run.
