Some neat video - making a V8 block out of a solid block of aluminum.

I like to make chips. Something relaxing about running a manual lathe.

Pretty cool video of the block and very nice machine; I wish I had it. I don't agree with their method of machining, though. There is a lot of wasted time on that part for sure. The manual lathe stuff and shipyard is extremely cool. I like the big stuff and have always been amazed at how good the machinists were back in the day. I think they were smarter then than we are now. They didn't have CNC machines or computers, but they got'er done!

Tim, that is some really neat video. The page on the ship yards is just amazing. Flame cutting 2' thick crank throws??? Some really amazing stuff.

David, I thought there was some wasted motion too, I guess they were just showing the machine's capabilties. Gotta think you could get some nice ports with that thing!

It kinda looks like a mini, the lettering is a bit small.

Tore,

Somtimes it's hard to convince the young guys in a shop that "you have to be smarter than than the machine".

It looks like a "lazy programmer". It's easy to apply a 3d toolpath to a solid model and create a program like this. What's tough is separating the features that are best 3d machined and then the features that are best 2d machined. A part like this needs to be roughed out, laid outside in the sun, rain, hot, & cold to "normalize" and then put back on the machine and finished. If you take a solid block and machine it to finished dimensions in one opp, it's going to move some when you let go of it. Then, when it does, you have a warped-up pos part. It is a cool demo, though. I love simultaneous 5-axis machining! Cool

Thats some amazing articulation Tim. You don't have to worry about gouging a valve seat (if the programs right!!)

I used to run CNC's back when i was fresh out of high school....they were pretty cool, but i agree with OLEREDFORD
Theres nothing like sittin on a stool in front of a manual lathe. If its on my old mans lathe or milling machine a whisky in hand is also obligatory. jocolor

I have a spot for metalworking. I am a welding student. May take a few machine tool classes after I am done. First ran a lathe in the welding shop this year (beveling pipe to weld up) Been hooked ever since.

Eventually I want to open my own fabrication shop so the machine tool classes will probably come in handy.

Also on that note, my dad also worked for a short time at the shipping yard at one of the Bethlehem Steel plants.
