i bought a used rotating assembly with forged pistons. it had about 50 passes from truck pulling. can i reuse the rings or should i replace them? how do you tell if a ring is bad? thanks p.s. sorry for the dumb question.

Its easier to replace them now than find out they are worn out and its best to replace them since you are putting them in a new bore, if the existing motor was going back together (as taken apart) at that much use you could reuse them if their where no problems noticed.

in short, Replace them.

If the ring is not going back into the same bore it came out of ... replace it.
