Is this true?

Post  D's557BBF on August 31st 2010, 11:05 am

I was just told that I should get my car painted first instead of wiring it first.

"He said" Reason being, paint sprayed on the new wiring will / could make the insulation on the wires brittle. No way I can get both done right now (paint and wiring) and make it to KY in may.

If I only do the wiring I can make the bash in May with one ugly bad azz mustang!!

Keep in mind that I'm very anal about doing it right. If there is the slightest chance them new wires are going to get damaged because of the new paint, Then it's getting painted first!!!

PAINT THAT MFeR FIRST D..
Just take precautions to protect the paint, like a little foam around the door edges/ etc. No big deal. If thats all you need, it shouldnt be too hard to get ready, especially if you get a Painless kit. Take up Adam's offer and Git er-done.

dont paint the wires, either tape um off or undo them and get them out of the way. A quality paintjob wouldn't be one that had the wiring painted over......................

I'd wire it 1st ,your more likely to scratch the paint than to get paint on the wires. That's why they make masking tape!! king

paint wont hurt the wires, just look like shit when it starts comen off.thats what tape is for,or you can spray under the hood now and do the outside later. Smile

petroleum products, oil or gas, will break down regular wire (r90,rw90,t90)
I have never seen evidence of paint breaking down insulation on wire, even at much higher voltages where it would be more prone to fail. In fact i've seen some pretty old houses that have had the service conductors painted since we ran our houses on batteries with no issues.
FWIW in electrical school they warned us about paint and such on wire, but like I said....I never seen any issue.
Also 12 (or 16) volts just isnt enough push to come through the insulation in such a manner. There would need to be significant insulation damage.

The solvents in automotive paint are very volatile. It will make the insulation on the wire brittle. But, like was said before, either cut it in and wire it(then paint the outside later), or just have the whole thing painted and wire it afterwards(just be careful not to scratch the hell out of it while it's being wired)... personally, i'd go with the first option, way less headaches that way...
