6al to a 7al
At what point does it become a good idea to change from a MSD 6AL to the 7AL? Is there horsepower to be had?

Funny how great minds think alike
I'm completating the same thing. I was just talking with a few of the members here on the same thing yesterday. From what I've picked up there is a voltage increase, which is good, the 7 has some built in features which I may not need... so I think at this time I'll will stay with my 6AL because it has no problems and add a two step for my brake. But I'm still open for further opinions.

Just like a fuel system the ign is one area where overkill is not a bad thing. If the 6 is too small it will let you know it. I have seen combos that ran a 6 where it should have not worked and it did. Have seen other combos with a 7 and still have issues when they shouldnt.
If the cylinder pressure isnt crazy or your trying to light a big wet mixture like alky the 6 should be fine. We ran a 6 on the 306 for years with no issues, he bought a 7 and a better coil and it smoothed up the idle a bit but et slips were the same.
Another idea is buy a better ign and toss the old one in the trailer for a spare.

Just remember, the 7AL uses more electrical current so, if it is not supplied enough then the actual mixture igniting may be worse.

Thanks this is what I was wanting to know. The engine is an 11.5 to 1, I run 110 octane and don't use poweradders, although I will spray it at least once this year. Will probably wait till the 545 comes together.

never ran a 6 but we switched from a digital 7 to a new 8plus using the same coil and picked up almost a tenth in the 1/8th.

I ran a stock Duraspark box well into the 8's @ 160 mph then changed to a Holley Prostrip Annihilator igntion system , never gained .001 , just was able to open the plug gaps up . I run in the 7's now and plan on getting into the 6's with it
