will a piston made for A460 heads work with C460 heads?
well i have been kicking around the idea of going with C460 heads
but dont think i can swing it this year so i was thinking about
running my current A460 heads and possibly switching to C head next year

also Jesse if you are going to switch get ready to invest about another 10,000 to 12,000 for the work to make it happen...C460's are not cheap to run....

depends on the forging, domes NO, flat tops can be done if right forging. One time I did a cost difference A460 to C460 top end . Both T&D shaftrockers, titanium valves , single 4V intake. NO push rods, lifters all new parts , Cost diff. $68.- more to run C460 headsjesse wrote:well i have been kicking around the idea of going with C460 heads

Jesse,
There was a set of C- pistons on E-bay a week or so ago. Just look up Ford pistons. It was about sixteen pages then.
Regards.

Jesse , the C piston in a A combo will be short of comp. ratio .
Re: will a piston made for A460 heads work with C460 heads?
the class rules are 530+2%
so maybe the Aheads is more of a wise choice
and i think i am just gonna run what i have for this year and hope the motor holds up for next year
and than upgrade to a set of newer Aheads

Out of the box, the A heads flow better than the C heads. No surprise there. With the proper porting the C's are better in my opinion. Depends upon what you already have. If you are starting out with a clean sheet of paper, I'd go the C's. There's not a huge difference in price that way. If you already have some A stuff (pistons, shaft rockers, etc.) then I'd stick with that plan. The 4.500" bore will work with the C's, but, the C's like a big bore. The A's in that case might be a better choice if that's your plan. There are several people who can get good numbers out of either head. Being the "nuthugger" that I am, I had Charlie do my C's and I'm very pleased with the results. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Maintenance wise, not a big difference in my opinion. It's kind of what you want. Either head will get you there.

besides Jese with a 4.6 bore it would take a 4" stroke to get 531 cubes.... so in essence you are changing everything you have..... to keep the same cubes

Re: will a piston made for A460 heads work with C460 heads?
good point guy's
my current set up seem's to work fine so i think i am gonna send them to charlie and see if he can help them out a bit
i wonder if the 4.5 bore will be a noticeable differnce from the 4.440 i was running?
in that case i might just be better off freshing the current heads
and dont worry so much about flow
and i have the headers for the Aheads
so i am just gonna stick with them
if i ever decided to build a 600+cid motoro than i might think more about the
Cheads
i do this alot
i get some free time and i think to much lol

Me too, I keep trying to figure out some advantage that I can use to my benefit also. I wish sometimes that I would have built a puller rather than a mud drag truck. I think that the A heads are a very respectable set of heads considering the age of the design. I can't remember the exact #'s but Lem and Phillip put together an A head motor well over 1000hp. Nothing exotic, just good parts that will do the job.jesse wrote:I get some free time and i think to much lol

We did 1110 hp in 2002 with a 557" combo and 2 1050 dommys. 4.6250" boreX4.1500" stroke. Our A heads flowed 475 on the intake and 350 on the exhaust. Not your normal A heads for those days, but we liked them

Re: will a piston made for A460 heads work with C460 heads?
if i could get my heads to flow those numbers i would stop looking for a new set
my heads are fully ported by shannons here in mn
but i think they were thinking bigger is better
the ports are big but the numbers are
411.2@800
414.1@900 int
322.3@800
337.4@900 exh
w/o pipe
maybe charlie can help the numbers out a bit
they are the older tfs heads
i also head that the newer ones can flow close to 500 with the right guy doing the chopping

Ours were the older ones, they had no markings on the ends, but were A 460's. If you have a fax number, I could fax you the flow sheets.

A set of new castings and a CNC job would be a good option, my new style tfs's are blowing 465ish and I have a set of old motorsport's blowing in the 445 range.
