NEW 28's are gonna work fine with a 4.30 gear it will put me right at where I want to be through the traps. Local speed shop wants $500 for 3055's mounted and balanced and will make sure I get a matched pair. Not exactly sure on replacement interval but sure Jason and Rich will help me figure that out but I have already planned on them being a regular item to be replaced next year.
The truck weighs significantly more than I was thinking based on my 86 and based on the info we have gotten this season I am gonna be realistic next year and run a 9.50 index where we can slow it down to run the numbers and hopefully be in the money once in a while.

Re: My new 528 combo
Lol, tryin real hard to sell them tires huh?! I have a list of things to get done over the winter to have a successful program next year. On the list is a spare trans and converter! Do you need a set of 4.11 FRPP gears lightly used with ~20 passes?

Re: My new 528 combo
Well I finally got off my ass and got the truck torn apart and found a broken pump gear in the trans and the remains of a thust washer along with aluminum powder and shavings. I did not get it torn down completely but got a feeling a planetary went to lunch, was kinda in the back of my mind how long were the stock 3 pinion planetary was gonna last.

From what I have read, you'll never kill one, at least at your power level (don't take that wrong). Hapmton loves his and I'll end up with one when I go racing next year.....
As far as weight, find it elsewhere....

Re: My new 528 combo
Won't take it the wrong way, I think the motor was making alot more power than the numbers would lead most to believe. Everything was set up assuming 2800lbs (my guess based on my 86) but found out it was more than 500lbs heavier than that. Alot of things are getting changed over winter. We are gonna do a couple things with the engine that are proven that we didn't have time to last year. Gonna lose some weight carbs converter gearing and tire size are also getting changed. Probably won't run 8.60 n/a that was wanting because of the weight but it should run a hell of alot better next year, time and money became a big factor this year.

Re: My new 528 combo
Im right at 3050 w driver, stock case powerglide w a 1.80 straight cut gearset, 300m ringless input shaft, the usual pinned stator tube kevlar band dual ring servo piston, 7 discs in a factory high drum deal.
This is the 5th season on it never been touched outher yhan readjusting the band one time and a fluid swap and that was onlynto try the thicker hygaurd hyd oil......it has Schaeffer's all trans in it now like it did in the beggining.
Its never give me one fit, tb always engages, never rocks ...... tranny has been the last thing i ever had to worry about.
all the guys that run the mod 275 class run um and the bb nos cars are 3450.
on top of durability it will calm the hit down, and you go faster overall as the glide robs less power
you can do what you want but if yours is f'd now is the time to cut bait and make the swap.

Re: My new 528 combo
Tore trans down finally and other than the broken pump gear there appears to be nothing wrong with the trans itself, I am gonna pick up another case and front pump and put it back together rollerized. I am not gonna replace any clutches or mess with the current setup other than rollerizing it but I have a small sponsorship deal with a local machine shop for that so my only cost will be parts.
I did pick up 2 pg's today complete for Ann absolute steal both stone stock and one is in working order.

Re: My new 528 combo
mines pretty much the same as Jons. I wish I would have switched sooner, woulda saved me money on C4s.
Re: My new 528 combo
Don"t give up on the old obsolete c-6 just yet. If you can put it together cheap. I have had one that went many passes behind my turbo 460 in a 4200lb car. It ran low tens blowing through the convertor with bone stock guts three clutch high drum. Had good vb though. When you set them up right and one ounce of good luck and not break dumb shit it can be a very tough tranny.

I am not giving up yet but I have the pg's to build too so I will have options. Maybe can finally answer the question which trans is faster, lol.

Good luck with your build! I have been getting some weight outta mine 250# so far and got another 130 to 150 of easy weight to remove then its gonna be a lot of little projects to get it as light as possible.

Re: My new 528 combo
Got another 109 lbs. out of it last week, gonna work on some more little tedious things like cab mounts and engine crossmember, dash and windshield. I will be making the center of the engine crossmember removable to be able to service the oilpan if needed and gonna replace the trans crossmember with some light weight tubing vs. the heavy stamper factory crossmember and removing parts of the boxed inner frame rails hoping for another 100+ lbs.
