460 bracket engine in my 67 comet Empty 460 bracket engine in my 67 comet

Post  manofmerc February 29th 2012, 8:55 am

I built this back in 2006 but I just did a freshen up and if anyone saw my c6 built in the trans section there are some details on that and my convertor swap .After getiing my car to hook up finally after going to caltracs and new slicks .This weekend I got to my local track Shifting at 6000 and hooking up good I went 6.95 at 98 mph .And 10.99 in the 1/4 .I got out of it and went 118 mph .My other pass with a half throttle leave was 11.17 at 123mph .I am trying to get used to my convertor and rear suspension .This car weighs 3420 with driver .466 cu.in srp flat tops for 11.67 compression scat h beams decked d1 block .Solid reed cam 250-259 @0.50 5.86 6.03 lift .My heads are edelbrock cj with a good valve job no porting just a backcut on the intake valves .Comp 3/8 pushrods and lunati 73121 valve springs .Intake is a performer rpm airgap ported to match my heads .A lot of work went into the intake to match my cj size heads .Qft 950 carb and a mechanical carter fuel pump .On teardown I found #7 rod bearing showing copper .The other bearings looked ok .This engine spun #7 a few years ago so I decided to do the restriction at the lifter tower cross over .I went with fully groved king main bearings after a suggestion from Mr.Kane and a melling high volume pump.My bearing clearances where all in the .003 range .I have a milodon 9 qt. pan and pickup valvoline 20-50 vr1 .I have more oil pressure now I hope I dont have any more problems with #7 rod .With two shims from mr. Kanes shim kit I have 75 psi cold 65 hot .My comet weighs 3400 with driver .After a discussion on this forum about my traction problems I changed out my 4.56 gear to a 4.10 .My comet hooks consistent and is quicker with less gear .The 8" ati convertor was what I had been needing all along .I use dixie performance in Mcdonough Ga. for my machine work they did a simple ball hone on my engine and it runs this good .In 2006 they bored line honed and decked it .I am thinking of going to a victor intake my converor goes to 5000 .What you think about that .Doug Smile

460 bracket engine in my 67 comet Empty my previous times

Post  manofmerc March 15th 2012, 6:30 am

Normally on a cool day my best 1/8 7.26 .On a warm day 7.40s 11.36@118 in the 1/4 this is with a 10"tci convertor and 4.56 gears .I am running 4.10 gears and the 8"ati convertor now .Getting the convertor to work has been the best addition to this car so far .I just had to get a new rear suspension and tire to make this happen .I bought it off this forum from 9 second comet .My old setup just wouldnt work .On my engine freshen up I discovered a wiped out thrust on my crank my old tci convertor had balloned .I took a crank from the junkyard and had a turned and balanced .I had two bent valves as well so I was turning 7.40s with two valves that werent sealing .I discovered this whenever I pulled my engine and did a leakdown .They were ex valves .I have had a victor on this engine before it was between one and two tenths slower with the victor .I am planning on putting it back on to try it out .The guy at ati thinks it will work better than my rpm airgap .That rpm is really a good intake .I will go back to the track for t&t this weekend .Thanks to you all for the responces .Doug Cool

460 bracket engine in my 67 comet Empty update on my comet a new level of consistency

Post  manofmerc July 10th 2012, 5:55 am

I havent been able to go to the bracket races this year .For whatever reason but this weekend I made it to my hometrack .Silverdollar raceway in Reynolds Ga.On my first pass I didnt hook up and ran a 7.42 .I lowered the tire psi to 13 and the next three passes were 7.144-7143-7149 .I have to give credit to the ati convertor .My new convertor has go to be the reason for this .With my old tci 10" the ets varied by four to eight hundreths .My driving sucked though I redlighted on all my four passes .There will be a next time though .And thanks again to 9 second comet for selling me his cal trac setup .The only adjustments I have made to them are an additional half turn of preload and lowered air pressure (15-13) Doug

460 bracket engine in my 67 comet Empty Good to hear

Post  manofmerc July 13th 2012, 6:02 am

So glad those tires worked for you ! I talked to the mickey thompson rep.At the track a couple weeks ago .He said you can go to 12-12.5 pounds on those tires we are using .I droped mine to 13 and it was hook city ! He also said to rotate them after every race .The ones I sold you I rotated them every 12- 15 passes .Good luck and be safe .Doug Smile
