Post  soupbean July 31st 2012, 10:42 pm

How many passes are you 10.5 tire guys getting out of your tires? I bought some 3055 stiff walls in april. They worked fine for a while but not anymore. I didn't think I had that many passes on them till I added it up and i've got about 70 passes on them already. I had the car at my local chassis guys place today and he called his M/T buddy. He said with my power to expect about 25-30 passes out of the tires. My buddy has a foxbody with a very similar set up and power and got 100+ passes out of his still hooking good but changed them due to tread depth. Thoughts???

IMO thats a bunch of runs on a 10.5, the sidewalls go before the tread wears out.

I agree but 25-30 don't seem like very much for the cost of the tires and as quick as I get to 25-30 passes. That's about 3 weekends for me. LOL

We got about 20-25 passes before the sidewall was dead. That was with pretty hard sixty foot times. Bead locked wheels with tubes.

How do you know when the sidewall is "dead"? The sidewall always looks like it is getting beat to hell on this deal even when they are new. They just get to where I have to keep dropping psi to get them to hook as time goes on. A new set I start at 13 psi leaving around 3600-3800. Now I'm at 10.5 at 3000. Ofcourse they look worse now on video because of the lower psi but not very pleasing when they are new. Granted, I have made alot of changes since those tires where new. Guess we will see Fri.

We use more air than that. Lowering your launch rpm is probably hurting more than helping. Probably hitting the tire harder.

We watch the sixty foot times and video to determine when to put new tires on. We log every pass in a computer program with a ton of data.

I have about 30 passes on mine and I bought them used from Jon I beleave he said he had around 30 passes but they still hook great
they are M/T 31x10.5x15Ws and I run 8 to 10 psi in them just depends on how the track is hooking that day but I don't have any real big hp I only run in the 6.70s in the 1/8

I'm learning that in some instances, what would make sence, do the opposite and it will work but I'm trying to understand the logic behind lowering the lauch rpm hitting the tires harder. Is it because there is more room for the engine to rev before the converter comes in?

X2 for me. All of the FAST SS guys replace every 15-18 hits. Sounds silly I know but it's the price to pay if you want to run a small tire and 60 in the 1.teens to 1.10's

Even in 1.30 you are still hitting the tires pretty good, I have about 45 runs on my 28x10.5's but always footbraked before we will be hitting the tires with the tb next Sunday but I am pretty sure that I will have to replace the tires fairly soon. I am just starting to test though so gonna see if they have some life left in them.

And just to vent for a minute.... Ordered a new set yesterday. Told the Summit guy "last time I ordered a set, y'all sent a badly mismatched roll out set, please note to make sure to send me a set matched". Got them in today, one 89 1/4", the other 88". WTF!!! You are a race parts dealer, cmon people!

Another tire question... Empty where to buy slicks in Ga.

Post  manofmerc August 3rd 2012, 7:22 am

Soupbean I see you are in ga. When you go to summit in mcdonough you go right past a much better place to buy slicks and other speed parts .Barnett performance in atl.I buy my slicks from them .Their counter guys are racers and engine builders .If you go there they will get the right circumfrence for you .they have plenty of tires to pick from and are aware of the importance of the right size tires .Here is a # for them 404 522 1320 .I am 15 miles from summit but for really serious parts I always go to barnett .Their counter guys are the best .Call and ask for Chris .And if you like to call me sometimes always good to talk with another Ga. racer .Doug 678 603 8400 Neutral

Another vote for Barnett performance I buy all my slicks from them and have never had a mismatch set.Look guys I have been racing cars since I was 14 and by no means no all there is to know. But 30 passes??What kind of horsepower are ya'll making?Granted I am running much bigger slicks and at best making a 1000 hp but I have gotten 200 passes on one set of Mickey T's.But average more like 150.Do you guys rotate your slicks? For maximum life they should be rotated at least every other race. This also helps the sidewall as well as the tread.

1600-2100hp depending on turbo size. 3300lbs. 1.teen sixty foots

The 275 drag radials last a lot longer on our cars. Same short times.
