New Toy in the driveway Empty New Toy in the driveway

Post  66prostreetfairlane May 24th 2015, 2:44 am

I decided to get rid of the new car in favor of a paid off toy the other week. I was browsing around on the inter-webs of craigslist. I happen to catch a picture of black convertible mustang that looked nice. The item description was simply 97' Mustang. Once i started clicking through the pictures the alarms started going off. It had the replica gt500 wheels, cobra brakes, saleen leather seats, new top, and a 4.6 DOHC motor. I immediately called the seller to confirm the price of $5,900. It happen to be 15 minutes down the road and I was able to go take it for a test drive that weekend as he was out of town on business.

After looking it over, it started out as a GT and had the Cobra running gear put in about 20k miles ago. It has a saleen interior, saleen spoiler, long tube headers, x pipe with magnaflow exhaust, bbk cold air intake, bbk aftermarket throttle body and mas air, full cobra suspension, brakes, motor and trans. The guy that had owned it passed away and had gave it to this guy's daughter who was selling it. The guy selling it knew nothing about Fords or the car, but was selling it for his daughter as she has a small kid and wanted a suv.

After overnighting the funds, I picked it up for just over $5k. I drive 45 miles to work one way on the interstate so it does just fine with the 5sp. I've gone through all the maintenance items, plugs, wires, belts, and fluids, so it's road worthy. The last items for me are tinting the windows, cobra front bumper, and some paint work. You can't beat the top down in California and some power to back it.

Great find. I love it when a real car guy finds a needle in the haystack.

thanks, I had a metallic red 94' back about 10 years ago, but that was just a GT. That dohc motor is pretty impressive for what it is. If I didn't drive so many miles on the freeway I would change out the gears in the rear, as the 3.23 it has now have a lot left to be desired in stop light racing. I can do 75mph at about 2200rpm, so I don't really want to put in 3.73's and be at 2800 rpm everyday to work. I intend to find a dyno shop that can do a custom tune on it in the near future. In SoCal we plenty of those to chose from.

MORE POWER!!!

I just can't leave anything alone.
