I bought a mildly built 460 for my 64 Ford Galaxie. It’s got decent parts but the cam is wild for these iron heads. From what the guy says it’s a Crower stage 5 with 272/277 @ .050 690/698 108 degree lobe separation. Anyway I’m going to put a more appropriate cam back in it. Thinking a 242/248 Comp solid roller. .657/.664 lift 110 degree lobe separation. This is a street car that will be beat on pretty hard. I want it to be fast, but I know it’s not. I want to throw more cam at it but I think it is probably senseless with the heads I have?

I want to but that is a slippery slope. If I buy valves it seems like I should go to a bigger valve. If I do that I am 1/2 way to the cost of a pair of aftermarket heads. I kind of want to just get by till I can afford heads… You are right though. I should.

Stock valves with those heads wont accept more than .560" lift unless the spring pockets were cut down. I like the Comps cam but it will still be big. Ive seen D0VE heads with 2.19" intakes. Longer valves by .150" will help to get good spring geometry.

Word, the cam I just took out of this motor was a Crower 272/277
With 690/698 lift & 108 degree lobe separation. He must have done some work to the heads to accept the springs that are on them. I ended up ordering a 242/248 Comp with .657/.664 & 110. Having all of the springs tested now & going to start porting the dove’s this week. Thanks for the info.
