I have used hydraulic roller lifters with Boss9 heads and the straight tie-bars worked but, the pushrodss were a lot shorter and seated at the top of the lifters.
With the pushrods seating inside the lifter and 5/8" longer pushrods it is a different story.
ISKY used to sell "high button" solid roller lifters, I don't know if they still do.

any chance the straight tie bar lifters would work with an offset seat and a long taper on the pushrod?

Re: Boss 9 lifters
The reason for the need of the z bar is because of the laid down ehx push rod. I have not seen any straight links that will not cause a problem/interference of push rod thru the lift of the cam

rich,i think the intake pushrod requires the z bar lifters to clear.exhaust just has a lot of angle, but with liters to the inside of the block the intake pushrods interfere with top of the straight link

Re: Boss 9 lifters
Pushrod contact with the rivets holding the tie bar is usually the issue with a straight tie bar; given the pushrod angle.
