Crank adapter question Empty Crank adapter question

Post  biddy84 August 30th 2009, 8:49 am

Can anyone using one or a person that knows, tell me if the Crank shaft adapter is needed when running a PG and midplate kit from TCI. I am having problems and before I go purchase a new plate, I need to know if it is used or needs to be used. Obviously I am having starter clearance problems. Before you ask, the car came this way. Thank you fellow keepers of the knowledge.

You will need to use the crank adapter. It keeps the converter centered in the end of the crank. There is one other possibility. You could have a custom converter made. Powerglide, but have them put Ford pilot on the end for the crank and also extend the pilot by the thickness of the adapter plate.

What starter are you using? I have an adapter plate and don't have any starter clearance issues.

I use a hamberger starter. I needed to see if others are using the plate and adapter. I have the PG with turbo input shaft. I don't use an adapter.

I may just buy the ATI plate. I think I screwed up the plate somehow (just not thinking before it was welded).

Thanks

I had a TCI in my first dragster and never did get the starter right. THey have hub that was bolted to the fly wheel and use a small collar that went in the crank as well. So on the new car I got the ATI deal and have been way more pleased. You should be able to use any powerglide converter and not have to worry about spacing as they send you 1/2" spacers as well.
