The Jack Austin Project; part 4

Post  c.evans on August 26th 2011, 8:19 pm

Well guys, Mark McDonald is racing Jack's Mustang this weekend at the NHRA Div 3 (LODRS) event at Beech Bend in Top Sportsman. This is their first time racing in Top Sportsman and the good news is that after the first session he's in at #18 with a 7.474 e.t. @ 186.00 mph and that's on nothing but motor.

Additionally, Phillip Oakley is racing in Top Dragster and after the first session he's in at # 16 with a 6.705 e.t. @ 200.11 mph. Congratulations to both!

Is this "Top Sportsman" a 16 or a 32 car field? ... The 16th spot will probably have a time somewhere around where Phillip is now in "Top Dragster".

Randy,

Top Dragster and Top Sportsman are both normally 32 car fields. Of course Top Dragster is for the dragsters and Top Sportsman is for the door cars. At Beech Bend this weekend, we have a full field of dragsters + more, however thus far only 24 door cars have shown up. The unusual thing is that Div 2 (TN, GA, SC, NC, AL, FL, VA, MS) is also running their LODRS event at Z-Max this weekend in Charlotte, so a lot of the Top Dragster and Top Sportsman cars are there, that we would normally compete against. Two adjoining Divisions having their race on the same weekend.

I just noticed that Charlotte only has 22 T/S cars. They have more Comp/Elim. cars than T/S with 25.

Dylan Stott is #5 with a 6.89@199 with the Shelby and #4 with a 6.72@201 in T/D.

James Noel, the '69 Mustang I posted a pic of earlier is #22 with a 8.11 in T/S, with the SBF.

Oh yeah, Fulp is #7 out of 7 in the 10.0 index with a 10.09. Rolling Eyes

I see ... I was under the impression that Beach Bend was the only major NHRA race this weekend. Multiple events will certainly thin the fields; especially of those cars. In "Top Sportsman" the turbo cars already outrun everyone - IF - they can make entire runs and live for the entire race, (which is not very often as of yet). The Nitrous cars and Supercharged cars are pretty equal for now.

Yes, I have updates. After a long full day at Beech Bend,,,,,,,,highlighted by a visit from Lem, Paul Kane, Dontas Singleton, and Hugh Wade (thanks guys),,,,,,after the final qualifiying session here's the results.

In Top Dragster, Phillip Oakley is in at #23 out of 38 cars, with a 6.705 @ 200.11 mph. Fellow Ford dragster drivers Cheyenne Stanley and Craig Sullivan are also in the 32 car show. Unfortunately, Larry Conolty just missed with a 6.797 on a 6.79 bubble.

In Top Sportsman, Mark McDonald is in at #29 out of 34 cars, with a 7.424 @ 186.92 mph. Mark's incrementals were; RT= .015, 60'= 1.084, 330'= 3.071, 1/8= 4.741, mph= 149.56, 1000'= 6.189, 1/4= 7.424, mph= 186.92.

Even though Mark is #29, I'm still pleased because the big majority of the cars in this class are either blown or on nitrous, whereas Mark is nothing but N A motor in Jack's Mustang.

Charlie,
Did you see Colin Wigle down there at Beach Bend...? He's supposed to be running his D3 headed 460 engine in Super Stock these days.
