I'm going to swap my 351M out of my 77 4x4 for a 460 and while I'm doing this I would like to change over to the later model 5 speed. Any body done this? Let me know if it's possible.

It is possible, but the newer 5 speeds do not have a seperate trans/bell, but are one piece deals that use slave/master cyl actuation rather than a mechanical linkage like the old 70's models had. You will need to fab in a slave and master for the clutch, and possibly fab up something for a crossmember. I would guess that you will need to have new driveshafts made also. Cool

Just got back in from the garage; well it's something I would like to do and I was wandering if it could be done. I like the 70s trucks more than the 80s which is why I would rather switch trannys instead of trucks, so I'll do some research and see what I come up with.

Well this is a common swap, but you loose your castiron transfer case and you have to redo the linkage on it too. New driveshafts are easy. Making The cover over the trans is easy as it just unscrews and there are kits for a master cylinder. Or if youve got a donor vehicle just steal the Pedro and master cylinder set up with it. Just a little bi of fab work. Unfortunately you caint convert the zf5-6 to Manueluely depress the cluth fingers without serious fab work on the trans. And it just easier to put in a master. And remember the 5 speed is nice but caint handle the beating all the. Way iron can. And if you do it anyways, replace the shifter fork bushings while it's out! It will save you a lot of heartache!

Did any trucks come out with the 5 speed and a 460 motor? Which trucks do I need to look for to get my parts from? This truck is not going to be a the one I use when I go to the mud pits, so it won't see any harsher treatment then the trucks that already have this set-up. That's why I have the other post on the 44s because I am building a small street version of a moster truck,77 Ford big block style with a wild paint job. Like a Star @ heaven

Thanks Old blue and barbatostan, I appreciate the come back. I've got the 351 sold and will be yankin it out in a couple more weeks and that's when the real fun begins because after I get the body off the frame it will be a little easier to do any changes Exclamation
