Post  dirt_worker June 29th 2012, 10:54 pm

Finally hit the dyno yesterday w the engine that took me 3+years to get put back together.
I CANNOT be happier w the results and the ease at which they were achieved!
As some may remember In 2008 I was running a 545 w p51 heads that made alil better than 800hp on race gas.
I'm a real hotrodder who loves to drive my truck around town  and out to our local racetrack to run it.
Although it was streetable, running race gas on the street was a real pain.
The economy tanked in 2008 and so did my racing budget so the p51s and top end were sold via  blake Cartwright and the project was sidelined while i focused on other priorities.
I knew when I put it back together I wanted at least the same hp but stipulated it had to be made on pumpgas. After reading the post on seth humbree's 557 pump gas A head deal I knew that was exactly the build for me.
I slowly gathered parts and pieces to put it back together buying mostly used (some new) parts from many of guys on here. (Nevs, Lem, Blake, keith fulp, jbozzelle, Copperhead and many others)
We decided to Max out my existing 4 bolt dove block at 4.44 and reuse the forged scat crank and eagle 6.7 rods.
We reused the roller cam Blake  ground us for the p51 heads to keep cost down and the bare tfs a heads got 2.35 valves and what my cylinder head guy said was " not a lot of port work" to clean up the castings. On a 4.40 sleeve they flowed a tick over 400 and 300 on the bench.

Using flattop JE shelf pistons and a .061 cosmetic gaskets and 88 cc tfs heads the static comp came in at 11.7:1

Topped it w the newstyle tfs single plane intake (no porting )and an 1150 holley carb.
Dynoing was done w 2.25x30 headers w 4 in collectors and 3.5 inch magnaflow mufflers.
All pulls were done on straight 91octane Sinclair pumpgas except the very last one where we gave it straight 110 sunoco (which it showed us it didnt like by dropping about 15 hp. It likely woulda made the same power had we optimized timing and jetting)
Timing was optimized at 34 degrees.

It made 901hp at 6900 on straight 91 octane pumpgas thru the mufflers and 738 ftlbs at 6000.
Dropping the mufflers brought it up only a few points to 906@ 6900 and 741@6000.
Id like to thank everybody involved who sold me parts and gave advice  but especially to Blake Cartwright,  my local engine/cylinder head guy brent lamb of Lamb cylinder heads and mark kidd of kidd performance and dyno for all their hard work helping get these##.
In my opinion....unless exhaust packaging is a major issue or lower hp was all that was desired anybody wanting 750+hp and is building mostly from scratch the Ahead is the absolute best bang for the buck.
Btw...I was gonna be happy if it made 800 and when the first full poke showed 827 I knew it was gonna be a great day!

Side note: we didnt think to check the cranking compression till we were already starting to take it off the dyno.  It only pumped 150lbs...so its no wonder it liked the pump fuel so much. Wish we'd adjusted the cam timing and hit it once or twice more...lol

My lil yellow pickup is NOT gonna like this motor!

Thanks guys!
I'm tempted to port on the intake manifold and advance the cam to give it more cylinder pressure and take it back to the dyno.

Here's the best pull:

Thanks everyone for the compliments. To say I'm very happy w the results is a true understatement.
I questioned the dyno and I'm told its pretty fair.
The truck isn't ready for it quite So it'll most likely sit for abit longer before I have any track time.

One of our local super pro heavy hitters is a member here and recently had a engine failure. He is in the process of getting a new piece put back together.
I'm trying to talk him into throwing this beast into his ford powered Chevy for our biggest race of the year in aug!
I know I don't have enough talent to win a big money bracket race like this....but I know he does and am confident this engine could make it happen.

Cam specs are from Memory...
roughly .750ish lift and 280ish duration @.050 on a 110 lobe center. Its currently installed straight up. Blake specificly
Recommended I advance it 4 degrees to give it more cylinder pressure. Although I have a Danny bee I never remembered this until it was already being removed from the dyno.
Blake can answer any cam questions but I'm not too good w an engine that requires a lot of maintenance so I know this cam has a pretty (relative term) gentle profile.
very easy engine anybody could build w off the shelf parts. The key here us a great cylinder head design!

First of all great build!

I learn new things everyday from this site. With that said I have a question about the compression ratio. At 11.7:1 how is it possibly to run pump gas? I thought the general rule of thumb was anything under 11 can run pump gas but nothing over 11. Thanks

Kinda more too it than just static comp ratio...
aluminium heads and lots of overlap definitely help.
