Makes my day to make someone's day

I teach at a University here in Chattanooga, and two of my students are transfers from Germany for a semester. The university stuck them in a hotel instead of a dorm, so they have almost no interaction with students. There was a story in the campus newspaper about their situation. I felt really bad for them, so I thought about what I was doing this weekend, and decided to invite them both to Brainerd Optimist, the local track, Saturday for the races.

After class, I asked them if they had ever seen drag racing. Turns out that they watch it on tv all the time and were wondering where they could see a real race. When I asked them if they wanted to go see some racing this weekend, their eyes lit up! Man, made my day to see them all excited about seeing some drag racing. They were really surprised when I told them about walking through the pits, seeing the cars up close, and talking to the racers.

Just doing my part for international relations!

I have been taking some of my students to the race track for over 5 years. Students have done 80% of the work on the 'stang. It amazes me to see the reactions of students new to the country and seeing a race for the first time.

Um, sorry. Yes, I am an English professor.

But don't worry. I teach theory and criticism, and British Lit. I don't teach or bother with grammar, except when I have to grade papers. And, I never correct people unless they ask me to do so. Plus, if I corrected grammar, you guys would keep me too busy to get anything done.

If it's any consolation, though, I have taken classes in engine building, and I was a gearhead before I was an egghead.

Where do you think the name "redneck" professor came from? If you change your own oil, you pretty much are a redneck with these people, trust me. The fact that I work on cars as a hobby is quite strange to these people.

That and the fact that I don't put pieces of fruit in my beer.

Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves...you are still in Tennessee after all! And I say that with affection, being my Father's roots. Tenn is one of the only places outside of FL that I'd consider living...If I had a choice, that is.

But, kudos to you. Your in a chosen profession sorely underrepresented by people that actually care, as it seems you indeed do. And you're a car nut...we dig it!!!

Actually, the nickname came from the gun store in Baton Rouge I worked at while I was in graduate school. I put a big ole' scope on my little .22, and one of the employees said "you sure are a redneck for a professor." And that was it. I'm definitely more redneck than professor, no doubt. I hunt, fish, wrench, and do almost all of my own repairs on my house.

So, "redneck" is a badge of honor for me.

And, I totally get the "Tennessee" joke, no problem.
