Cerama coating headers
Has any one had a set of headers cerama coated? A friend of mine was telling me that it is recommended to "season" ( run them for a while uncoated) the headers before you have them ceramacoated. Is this true? My headers are such a S.O.B to take on and off I just wondering if that is necessary.
Thanks
Dave

Thanks
Dave

I've heard that story, don't know why it would make a difference. I've always coated my stuff before I ever ran it. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Re: Cerama coating headers
I had my headers coated this spring and was told if I wanted the inside coated not to run them or the coating would not last. Te guy who did mine sandblasted them inside and out then cleaned them with some type of mild acid before he could coat them also he said he couldn't touch them with bare hands as the oils from his skin would cause issues with the coating process. This is just what i was told.

The last set I had done ran me $285, and they were 2 1/4" primaries. Had them done at Moorepower Coatings in Waverly,Nebraska. Their website is : http://www.moorepower.com/ Hope that helps.

Not sure who you are looking at coating them? But DO NOT
use "Performance Powder Coating" In Yorkville IL. He did a
set for me and they rusted thru from the inside out in less
then 3 years, and wouldnt honor his Lifetime Warranty!

The last set I had done was $260.....inside and out. Probably costs a little more now. Competition Coatings (Bill Geise) in Auburndale, FL. Siuper sharp guy. He says DO NOT run them first if you're planning to coat the inside.

I was probably going to use performance coatings since they are local for me and I won't have to pay shipping. I had them dip my timing chain cover and they charged me $45 looks like chrome.

I used jet-hot in NC for my headers. IIRC it was around $300 for their 1300* coating.
I am very pleased.

Dave,
Is Performance Coatings north of Auburn's airport a few blocks?

I was told that new headers hold the coating better, because they have to try to blast the inside and there are places they can't get to.Just what I was told

That's right. They've gotta be PERFECTLY clean in order for the coating to stick. One other piece of advice: After you've had your hands and oily rags all over them during the install, BE SURE TO CLEAN OFF ALL THE CONTAMINANTS BEFORE YOU FIRE THE ENGINE. Alcohol or lacqer thinner works OK. Otherwise, those once invisible oils will become permanent brown stains after they're heated.
