Gears Empty Gears

Post  79Puller December 12th 2013, 12:56 pm

What gear would be best in a 80 street /20 strip 3300 car with a 521, C6 and 29x18 tire ?

Also car has a transbrake, I never used one of these before..are these hard on a car or is it better to just do the foot brake deal ?

Thanks guys.

2.78 : 1 will probably still spin on the street, and if it hooks will have air under the front runners at the track..............

A gear somewhere between 3.50 to 4.11 would probably be in a decent usable range for a 31" tall street tire/no over drive combo. According to the M/W gear dream wheel a 31" tall tire & a 4.11 gear works out to about 2450rpm at 55mph. And 31" x 3.50 gear would be about 2100rpm at 55mph.

80% street  Wink  2.78 gear will be almost a 7 :1 final. You won't hook that on the street with a c6 and he said a 29 inch tire in the first post.

I feel like he would like it better driving on the street with something that he can cruise and not spin the crap out of the engine.

And if the 512 is making good torque, it will run good at the track if the converter is above the torque peak a little bit.

I would probably run a 3.00 gear 2500 = 70 mph and if you wanted to stretch it out against a Vette, tell him to strain that piece of crap  Twisted Evil  5000 rpm = 140 mph Cool

Then you can run it in the 1/8 like a power glide. 6000 at the stripe 120 mph run it through in second gear. lol!

3.50 gear to 3.70 is what In my opinion!

If you have a 4.11 with 26" tall tires and go with a 29" tall tire it takes it down to roughly 3.68 gear ratio.

The car does have 29 inch tires now, I am going to try and fit 31s not to sure if they will fit. If I like drag racing it may be more of a track car but only time will tell. I was a puller now trying something different. What are you thoughts on the trans-brake.

3.25 or a 3.50 gear in my opinion.

I will go with Blake on this one 3.00 to 3.25. He did say 80% street. The speed limit is 70 on most highways. Put some spray(150HP) on it for the track, and it will act like a 4.10 gear or more off the line. A transbrake will let your stall go higher which will put more power to the wheels from a stop, has to stress something.

If right now it is 80% street I wouldn't run a trans brake if you decide to race it 80% of the time then add the trans brake.

Anything less than 3.50 gear with the correct stall speed to make it launch is going to creat a lot heat In the trans. 80% street driving with a 2.78 to 3.25 gear with a 2500 to 3500 converter will be slipping at cruise speed at 70 mph with 29" to 31" tall tires. Trans brake won't hurt anything street driving. I have run a trans brake in both of my cars since 2001, and they see about 50% street and 50% track.

At 2500 it will be running 70 mph and the converter will be closed to one to one it takes very little hp to run a constant 70 mph on the interstate. Also at 2500 stall it will most Likey be a tight 10 inch on a  521. And a good Trans cooler is a must on any stall converter.

Oh, yeah...the good trans cooler for sure. Also, if you install the t-brake, there's no law that says you MUST hit the button. Wink

I second that motion. I made several foot brake passes up in Sturgis this year due to a blown fuse, and I still went quite a few rounds.

How often will this vehicle see 70 mph and interstate driving?

With a 30" tall tire a 3.42 gear would give 2490 rpm in 3rd gear being 1.1

Multiply .12 by your tire size you want to run.

. I don't know what this gentleman might want to do. I just saw he was driving it 80 % on the street on know that stroked big block with a c 6 don't need any gear on the street. My 68 pickup had a. 3.00 gear under it with a c 6 and 29 inch tire and worked great. I will retract what I posted earlier as obviously I know not what I speak of. I oppoligise for any miss information I may have given.

If someone wanted to use a 2.70(ish) to 3.0 gear with a 31" tall tire (or taller) for better highway RPM numbers, but was worried about potentially lugging the engine a little too much in town stoplight to stoplight, a steeper overdrive low gear set in the C-6 might help out a little.
