Shouldnt the valve pockets in these pistons both be on the same side?

They are correct and typical of inexpensive pistons with 2 reliefs

Pistons with two opposed intake valve notches have an "OFFSET PIN" so, they can be used on either side of the engine and the offset will still be in the correct direction.
