Oiling problems with Morel lifters? Empty Oiling problems with Morel lifters?

Post  fastashley February 19th 2017, 9:29 am

Just ordered a set of Morel lifters. Talked to a local puller yesterday who said they had oiling problems with them because they had no oiling groove in the body.
Am I going to have oiling problems with $1000 lifters?

It's not uncommon to have to put a tiny groove to the edge office to get them to oil the pushrod.

Prime it with the intake off, then if it's not oiling up top it isn't that big of a deal to get the lifters back out to groove them.

Those lifters rely on the velocity of the lifter moving up & down in order to force oil into the oil hole.

They run fine but, don't prime well at all; especially when restricting the oil to the lifters.

What Randy said ^^^

I primed mine by rotating the engine slowly while spinning it with the drill. You'll eventually get oil out the pushrods...

Many high end parts designed to be used in custom racing engines are not necessarily intended to be plug-and-play, and final fitment is up to the engine builder for the respective custom engine. I view the lifters you have as being in this category and thereby necessitating custom fitment to each lifter bore, and I also think it's good that we have this option.  If such a component goes above and beyond the engine's (and engine builder's) needs then there are plenty of other components from which to choose, such as "looser" lifters.

Randy hit the nail on the head. Morel hyd. lifters take forever to prime. It's typical. They'll run just fine. It's best to have lifter to bore clearance in the .0017"-.0018" range and don't use anything heavier than 10w40 oil. I wouldn't go modifying the lifter. Some Morel hyd. lifters have the edge orifice oiling, some don't. I'm sure Morel knows what they're doing.

I was under the impression that using nothing heavier that 5w/40 only applied to certain part numbers.

It absolutely applies to certain part numbers but generally applies to all. Besides, with today's oils there is no reason to run anything that heavy other than in extreme applications.

So Scott, are you telling us that Morel makes $1,000.00 hyd lifters? Or are you telling us that you just start typing without reading the question?  And since you're an oil expert, what do you consider the line for "extreme" conditions?

These are not hydraulic. pn 6162 solid roller.

I typically run Valvoline VR1 20w50

That is what I was referring to... the oil hole in that lifter body is slightly above the lifter oil annulus so the velocity of the lifter moving down is required to force oil through that hole,  lifter bore oil clearance is crucial to be right.

Morel does have some $1,000.00 hydraulic roller lifters meant for racing applications.

Yes, Morel has $1K hyd. rollers. I never hear of problems with Morel solids but often hear of people talking about how long it takes to prime Morel hydraulics so yes, I made the assumption.
Extreme to me is offshore marine, off road (like Baja), truck pull, some circle track... apps where oil temps can get high with extended WOT rpm, or BIG boosted or power adder HP where you need a lot of bearing clearance. My specific comment about the 40wt was directed at Morel's hyd. rollers.

We sell a couple hundred sets a year for Fords. Check your lifter to bore clearance as you want around .0015 to .0018". You have a bushing lifter so no restriction to the lifters at all. Do not wash the lifters with solvent. Morel has a applied dry film lubricant on the axle for breakin of these lifters. Solvent will remove the lubricant. Run them for 20 minutes above 1800 rpm.

I normally run all my engines on my run stand, but before I start them (with solid roller lifters).

I will crank the engine over without the plugs and prime with a 7 amp drill until the pressure opens the bypass and continue cranking until the rockers start to oil.

I like to do this, it flushes all the oil system and anything that got missed brushing and cleaning, has a good chance of getting caught before the engine is started.

Morels always take a long time to get oil to the top. But always oil.

It's quicker and cheaper to fix the lifters, if needed, than build a run in stand.

That won't make the lifters go up and down with velocity.

Last set of Morel UltraPro solid lifters I primed had more oil coming out of the pushrods than the valve cover rails could handle and that was a Dart BB Chev block which IMO has terrible lifter oiling. It took a while, but they'll prime.
