Oil pump pickup

Oil pump pickup
Installed my oil pump and pickup today.
The oil pump is a Melling M84 and the pickup is a Miloden 18645.
Oil pan is a factory front sump pan. 8.75" sump depth.
The bottom of the pickup is 7.25" off the oil pan rail of the block.
I understand that you want no more then a half inch of clearence off the bottom of the pan.
The first pic is of my oil pump and pickup. I will add the picture of the Miloden 18645 pickup on Summits site does not match what I have. But the # on the package matches.
The second and third pics are of the old pump and pickup. The pickup bottom is at a depth of 8.50"
I guess the easiest solution would be to swap the pickups. But they are pressed in. Can you get them out without destroying them?

Re: Oil pump pickup
I have been eying the Melling 84cs2 pick up. It looks more like my original one. I emailed Melling about it and found out the distance from the screen to
the end of the tube is 3 and 3/8" compared to the Miloden pick up I
currently have which is about 3"
Assuming the 84cs2 pick up sits
in the pump just as far as the other one, I am still 1" off the bottom
of the pan.
I checked Oreilly auto parts for a oil pump pickup.
My motor is out of a Lincoln from between 1973-1976. Did not see a press
in style pick up listed.
The Milodon 18645 is listed (as far as Summit goes...) for a 8" deep pan.
Would that extra .75" make a big difference?

Re: Oil pump pickup
Yes the 3/4" will make a difference, you don't want the pick-up sucking air. Get the correct part.

Re: Oil pump pickup
Does any one know of a press in style pick up that will be the right depth? Both the old and new oil pumps are the same height. I checked.
Would need to be about 3.50" from the neck on the tube to the bottom of the pickup.

there are pumpswith pickups that are different hight, truck is shorter ( deep) then 429cj scj,and boss, but all pumps will interchange, but if you use a scj/cj pump on a std car pan it will be too close, now i have had to redo every pickup for most all rearsump engines i have ever done, most are too far away, like i said 3/8 is perfect from bottom of pan, make sure to check rod clearance to pickup tube

Thought it was standard practice when doing a rebuild to get a new pump.
I tried ti get the old pickup out of the old pump. No luck. Tried heat and PB blaster.

Re: Oil pump pickup
The factory oil pump has a # on the side C8SE-A, or CBSE-A. If that
helps any.
Last night I got a Melling 84Cs82 pickup. Puts the bottom of the pickup 3/4" off the bottom of the pan.

Re: Oil pump pickup
I got the old pickup out of the old pump. I did it by cutting a series of slits in the pump body around where the pickup tube went in. I then was able to wiggle the pickup around, but not much. So I gave it a shot of PB blaster.
Comparison shot of the pickup I bought over the weekend and the old one. Around a 1/2" difference.
Pickup was tack welded to the pump, and the pump installed for the last time. (I hope)
