Junes issue of HOT ROD magazine has a write-up about Dave Freelander's BOSS 429, they also mention Adney Brown, John Lohone, and Jon Kasse in it. Cool I believe this was the same engine Dave had for sale awhile back and was in the Engine Masters. If he hasn't sold it yet, I'll bet the price just went up, now that has been in and on the cover of the ROLLING STONE HOT ROD magazine Laughing

What are the galvanized pipe nipples and caps in each head by the exhaust for, are these into the water jackets?

Those "pipe nipples" are to drain the oil from the top of the cylinder heads when a stock 429/460 BLOCK is used. The oil returns of the regular blocks are above the lower valve cover sealing area and removal of the valve covers spills a bit of oil down the outside if you don't drain that oil first.

It shouldn't be to hard to find there's a picture of the Boss 429 on the cover in the top right corner.I found it at Walmart,Later Mark.

hotrod just cant get enough of dfree!! david friebuger rants about and second guesses dave's motives behind going with a 429cid engine and not a stroker (in his editorial) (i don't know what month the issue is but they just put it on the rack today)

way to go dfree383 two months in a row in hotrod!

p.s. you went with a 429 to comply with engine masters challenge rules did you not?

If Mr. Freiburger was paying attention to other magizines he would have probably noticed that the motor in question in fact was built for and finished 11th in the 2008 popular hot rodding emc. Of which the rules require the displacement to be as factory built for the heads.

To this I will add that yes bigger inches will infact make more power and yes it could haver been built into a 598 for about the same money that the average person on the street would pay for the stroker kit. In fact it may end up their...... But I will also add that it makes more than adiquite power at 432" to send a set of drag radials to the smoke gods........ So what's the real down side for a pump gas street motor???? You'd smokem faster with a 598???

the only down fall I see in those heads is the fact it leaves a couple quarts of oil in the valve covers which takes away from the main oil pan....capacity... do these heads work on a factory Boss Block? My Boss Block has both sets of oil Drain holes... but I would prefer the lowers......to keep the oil in the pan...


all in all Dave Nice Article, be proud you got an engine in Chevy rod..... without a Blower or Turbo, or 27 stages of Nos

The oil in the heads isn't a big deal, without using external drain backs, just over fill the pan slightly and your good to go. Or run 2 drain backs the holes are already their and tapped.

I would run an origional block, (To Valuable) Get an A460 Block, You already know the benifits of the hugh bore and new metal.

yeah Dave but I have an original and everything to build it, you know as well as I do People are To Cheap to buy the stuff they all want it given to them for free...., before I give it away I will assemble it and sling the rods out the sides.... then cut it nto peices and take it to the Metal recycler....
