Larger Cal hand guns

Post  jones on May 17th 2010, 7:18 am

Did some looking around in to Gun shop this weekend. Been looking for a larger hand gun. Right now it's between a .460 or .500 S&W. I understand that the 460 has a higher FPS but the .500 has .100grams of weight over the .460

At what distance is the .500 good to?

Has anyone tried the revolvers that use rifle rounds, like the 30-30, 300mag, 30-6?

Stop..... What in the hell are you going to hunt or use a handgun of that caliber for??? IMO they are useless.......... I realize your a big guy but Please ?!?!?! What a waste of money !!! If you need to kill something that dangerous USE A RIFLE.

Plus Rifle Calibers in Handguns in most cases are a waste, you need barrel legnth to proper move and utilize the powder for those rounds and again your wasting your time.

Those big calibers are for guys with little........

Rant off !!! Laughing

The question is Jones WHY does someone need a Cannon? and beside you have a truck to put together. spend that $1000 on it....instead of something that has no use.... you will be happier with the truck....

I'm just looking around, I just been wanting to go wild bore hunting. Like the Coug said I can't find any priced less than $1,400 and I am not about to spend that amount of money right now. The guy that owns the shop was telling me that he can hook me up with a guy that goes hunting with a big knife, so I going to try to do that instead of the hand gun.

Don't you already have a .45 Long Colt? Those are great for heavy loads as long as its something like a ruger or other modern one.

The Big Smith's are great handguns, IMO. Both the .460 & .500 S&W's are hard hitters well beyond the limits of most shooters. Even the .44 Magnum is a very good longer range pistol in the right hands. Back in '97, I took a whitetail buck near my house at 320 yds with a scoped .44 Magnum. It's been proven that the .460 is a better all around cartridge than the .500, & it doesn't have as much recoil. Around here more guys are using the .460 than the .500 for those reasons. As for the rifle rounds, they're pretty much rendered useless in the handgun chamberings due to the short barrels. As for being chambered in revolvers, only straight walled cartridges are chmbered in a revolver. If you're hunting, there IS a place for thr Big Smith's, but for defense, the good 'ol .357 Magnum is tough to beat. Wink If you just want one to have one, I'd go with the .460. Besides, the nomenclature is more fitting, don't you think? Very Happy Very Happy

Yup, I have a .45 long colt, but a box of ammo is $47-60 where a box of ammo for the .460 is $22!!! Go figure?

I have been told that a lot of guy that by the .500 only end-up shooting them one or two times because it hurts their wrist. I could imagine if you aren't holding on for life you could hurt yourself.

jones if you allready have the 45 long colt use it.... no need for a bigger gun.... as for ammo buy you some new brass and reload it your self......the other guns are useless for anything but saying you have one..... I had a 44 mag and used it some but sold it cuz I didn't shoot it enough to warrant having it collecting dust......it shot nice but it still was a wrist workout everytime I pulled the trigger.....I still have some reloading stuff for the 44 but have been reloading it and sending it to Fabio....

Spend a few $$ on a single stage Rock Chuck Press, Case Trimmer and Some Dies for the 45 Long Colt. At those prices for ammo it will pay for itself very quickly if you doing a decent amount of shooting.

460 all the way, the numbers speak for themselves on that cannon. The 460 can use all of the .45 rimmed ammo out there too. Kinda like a .38/.357, the 460 can use the 45LC/ 454Casul/ 460 S&W. Use the big stuff when needed, and use the baby boomers for the rest. Cool
