SV-1 CARBURETOR - WEIRD (in a good way)

Post  Wayne Pearce on June 14th 2010, 7:49 am

I finally got around to installing my new Pro Systems SV-1 carburetor. When I say "weird", I mean installed out of the box, waited for the electric fuel pump to fill the bowls, pumped the pedal once, cranked it over, and it's running, idling at 800 RPM! With my previous 1150 Dominator, I had to dance on the gas pedal for at least a minute before it would idle at 1,100 RPM! I can't wait to get this thing on the road!

Okay, guys: The car is (was) on the road, but some electronic issues have surfaced that have me scratching my head! I gave her a try out blast on the first day, throttle response was awesome, the engine pulled like I was rear ended by the space shuttle, I was happy, all was well with the world - drove it home, put it in the garage. Second time out the car started to stumble and back fire through the carb, and exhaust, no joy - went home! Third day, started her up, ran awful until she got some heat in to her, but still back firing! Fourth day, it won't start at all - I found the spark to be a little on the weak side until I let go of the key - then there's one real good spark. The ignition system is all MSD. Any thoughts??

Ernie:
The engine is a 13.3 CR 545 cu. in. Ford, pushing through a Lenco 5 speed, and 4.11 gears.

I've had that problem when I sheared the roll pin on the dizzy gear.

Check the MSD box too.

Everything is OK - found out there was nothing wrong with my ignition (plug wire damn near knocked me on my ass, when I was hooking up my timing light)! My problem was some bad 110 octane gas (OLD), which in turn screwed up my plugs! New plugs, new gas, running real good now. Thanks everybody for your input.

I'd say that the new carburetor is the problem, it's running super rich at idle. That's why it started and ran so smoothly when cold the first time whereas with your old carburetor you were providing the needed enrichment until the engine warmed up with the accelerator pump. Now it has the plugs black from being over rich.
