Fuel System

Post  TorinoGT on July 9th 2010, 11:14 am

I recently had a new BF Evans engine made for my 1970 Torino, (572, P51 pump gas.. http://www.429-460.com/proven-builds-f4/572-p-51-pump-gas-street-engine-t5821.htm)

my old 466 had a mechanical pump, and -6 fuel lines (deadhead system). so its time to upgrage the fuel system.

The electric pumps ive been looking at require a bypass fuel line back to the tank either at the pump, at the regulator, or run a full return system (w/ fuel log)...

since im starting out 100% fresh. what is suggested (and why) for my 100% street driven car?

I have been thinking of purchasing the Mallory 250 pump (any comments on this pump). keep in mind whichever pump I purchase has to be able to run long periods of time (on the street)... so a pump that has served u well 9 seconds at a time, doesnt do me alot of good Wink also which regulator? or fuel log do you guys suggest?

thanks!

I've run those pumps (250 Mallory) for many years no issues, not sure if they will take continuous duty or not. A full bypass style will keep the pump happier for sure.

I put one of these pumps on my 78 cj5.

Since its street driven and your not making hp in the 700hp or more range you should be fine with something like this. We didn't need to run a regulator or a return line, the pressure isn't high enough to require a regulator. The regulator wont do anything at all to it, we liked it and it'll say not to use teflon. But your gonna want to don't ask Laughing . It has a pulsating noise and when you just turn the key to the on position you will hear it, when running not really. Sitting right over it we had to listen very close just to hear it.

I hope this helps, it worked great for me. his was a street driven vehicle by the way, never raced it.

Most of you will probably disagree w/me but,imo the manual pump would be my choice on the street, because you said it will NEVER see the track. And its gonna have so much power/torque that you can't stay in the throttle very long at a time.

I was very happy with my mechanical pump... but I just dont think it would keep up with the new engine... I think that im past the point of no return... dont think the engine has the eccentric (?) in it to drive a mechanical pump....

So any other opinions? im leaning towards running a fuel log and return at this point. probaby a quick fuel fuel log to match the carb... and the mallory 250 pump...

still like to hear more opinions!

Oh, originally I would have told you to use a mech. holley pump. My cj5 had an eccentric but it was worn to heck so.....But I don't want to give you bad advise, this one should be left to those who have run higher power motors like what you have.

I use a BG220hr (hr is the road race/continuous duty pump) with a return from the pump straight back into the tank. and a magna fuel 2port reg! Its great on the street but is more then enough at the strip as well.
