detroit locker in heavy 3900 lb. Truck with transbrake.... Will it last?

Post  bluef100fe on Mon Jul 12, 2010 2:06 pm

anybody running a detroit locker and using a transbrake? Would it be reliable? I'm finding that since i upgraded my racing tires on the truck my traction lock posi isn't staying locked up coming out of the burnout box or at the hit. I would go straight to a full spool but I still street drive this thing and occasionally tow a 7000 lb. trailer with the truck. I want to have my cake and be able to eat it too if possible. What do u guys recommend?

So I'm looking detroit lockers and seems theres three different styles nowadays the original cam lock style which i'm told breaks axles in drag racing applications, the newest is a gear locker which is suppost to be the best for what i'm trying to do and then the true trac which is somewhere in the middle? Has anybody used all three or any of these? How did they hold? Can u feel them unlock and lock on the street or track? I could feel the cam locker style on the street and i did care for it all every time you let off the gas when cruising the thing would unlock and the car felt like it was in neutral until you stepped on the gas, then it felt like it slammed back into like dumping a clutch at speed. Just harsh and jaring the driveline..... I can see why they break axles. Anyway, im leaning towards the gear locker unless you guys convince me otherise?? thanks for reading my rambling.... Also wondering if i should update my axles to 35 spline from the 31 spline i have now?

The Axle upgrade never hurts, especialy if your have alot of time on them

I've used the old style Detroit Lockers in the past and never had an issue, they are noisy but work well. I've also never heard they like to break Axles.

I just put together a Thorensen T-2 8.8 for my Dads 91 LX, not sure when we'll get to run it, but it sure looks nice, it has spiral looking gears. May look in to them, I will tell you it wasn't cheap.

well it looks like the guy i was talking to didnt have everything thing correct the gear locker is actually the true trac. Which is still around 500 dollars from what ive seen and only available in 31 spline to boot. Will have to look into the thorensen unit if its available for a 9 inch. The true trac has the spiral cut gears from what im seeing/reading also. Thanks dave the headache continues.

Had a buddy running a locker in a 2800 lb 67 Mustang w/ a 557. Car would go 5.40's, ran a locker in it for a little while but it finally giave up and he installed a spool.

They did come factory or optional on quite a few fords in the day........ They are the most durable of the streetable differentials offered IMO.

If you think you making more than they will handle a spool is about your only option..... and not the best on the street, although I have use them in limited occasions.

They make a 35 spline detroit locker if you are worried about the others and still use it for the street...then since you would already have the axles you could switch to a spool when you felt like it........D

I'm strongly considering the 35 spline deal. Thanks all.
