Piston Rock Empty Piston Rock

Post  Tore September 3rd 2010, 7:17 pm

Is piston rock a common problem when using a 4.5 stroke and 6.8 rod with a Dove block. My friend just tore down a Boss 557 with the mentioned components and it seems to me like the pistons wiggle alot. We also saw the pistons had scuffing on the thrust side, I emailed Charlie and he said that is common.

Thanks Tore

The short skirt pistons will rock more than you'd think. Just check the piston to wall clearence...that'll tell the story.

Mark at Probe may correct me, however to the best of my knowledge, pistons are cam ground and barrel ground. The problem is the "fat" part of the barrel, (the skirt) is pulled out of the bore at BDC with the short cylinder OEM blocks, so I'm thinking the piston can rock more at BDC than at TDC.

I have had a terrible time with this 64 Falcon I bought. I couldnt get it to run any faster than the 10.20s 122-125 mph. I did change the stall on the converter over the winter. This was the same drivetrain that was in my Blue 71 Cobra Torino. We swapped out fuel pumps, ignitions, Etc . I was really disgusted and pissed off. I have never struggled so much with a car.
I also posted on here about a low ratio gear set in a C6 and some said it would hurt me but I couldnt understand why it worked good in the Torino and not the Falcon.
Blake thru up a post about a situation and alot of people responded and they said it would hurt the times. So what the heck I had a set of 3.91 gears set. This was my easiest thing to change. Well I went from 10.20s to 9.87 just by swapping the gears. My best last week was 9.87 130.00 miles per hr. I had 4.30s with a 32" tall tire. SO I have pulled the low ratio tranny out and am in the process of putting in a standard gear ratio tranny and racing this Friday. I will let you know how I make out. So I guess you can gear to low.

I will make a prediction that w/C6 stock gears. It will run 9.60's. He might have to put the 4.30's back in after switching to the stock C6 geared tranny Exclamation Tore, maybe things are finally lookin up for us,after being bad for sooooo long. Laughing
